Running defrag and virus scan simultaneously

Aside from bogging the computer down, no. What OS are you using? In Vista, you really don't have to worry about defrag.

If the Av program has a file open, the defrag will skip it. If the defrag program is moving a file when the Av program tries to scan it, the AV program will skip it.

Are there any issues with running my defrag and virus scan at the same time?

Should not be a problem if the defragmenter has half a brain and intelligently uses free system resources to defrag. It will give priority to the AV scan and then automatically suspend/resume defragging according to AV's resource consumption. A good automatic defragmenter will do this. If you are running a scheduled defrag, it may bog down the system though, as both programs are resource intensive and compete for resources.

Which actually reminds me, it's time I updated my XP rig to AVG Free 8.0 🙂
