Running Crysis on M1530 (sadness)

Hey guys, I recently bought Crysis on Steam while it was on sale, aaaaand...

it runs like total crap on the lowest settings on the lowest resolution (custom cfg's, and stock settings).

Rig:
Dell M1530
C2D 2.0 ghz
3gb RAM
8600m GT DDR3
1680x1050 (but playing on a 1600x900 monitor)
Average 3dMark06 score: 3888

It runs TF2, MW2, Torchlight well if not perfectly at some degraded graphics at native 1680. Crysis looks terrible and runs worse getting nothing more than <15 frames average on CFG's that others are getting 30+ at low resolutions to boot.

I've tried things like Gamebooster that stops some processes on the computer, and it just does not want to work well.

I have had overheating problems in the past where I had to clean out a huge amount of dust from my fan grill. I may try that again. I've used Rivatuner to overclock, but it seems my 8600m GT just doesnt like the OC cause i would play for a little while (with a weak OC) and my computer would just turn off. Overheating again I guess. I guess it's time to clean it out again.

Do you guys suggest I try anything else? Because I've seen screens of people play this with integrated graphics (GF 6200) with some custom cfg's. I appreciate any help. Thanks!

Running Crysis in DX9 mode should give the performance a nice boost.

Yeah, try -DX9 when starting the game. Also Medium details tops, try 1280x720 for resolution. 1600x900 is way too much for a 32 shader GPU in this game.

I really think it might be overheating, cause I could hit 40 (even 60) FPS for like 5 seconds, but it seems as if my video card downclocks to keep from overheating, and i get a slideshow.

I can't even get good frames at DX9, 800x600, with custom ultra-low graphics configs or stock settings. I read everywhere that the M1530 is capable of running crysis/wars, but I'm not seeing it. Does it have something to do with 32-bit, 64-bit discrepancies? RAM usage?

Also, I have to add that i've been working with Crysis Wars, not Crysis or CrysisWH...is it something with Wars? im getting ~7-15 fps at 800x600, Best Performance settings, no motion blur, DX9...

should I try regular Crysis and try out what you guys were saying? I don't mind playing ANY resolution as long as its playable.

I really appreciate your help guys.

Well make sure the card is not overheating would be a good place to start. I have to clean my 4890 out every 3 months, i dont time it i just wait till it starts locking up and crashing and i know its time. At 800x600 it should be playable for you.

Time for surgery I guess.

On a sidenote, if I used a bare XP-SP3 partition and used it to only play games, would that help framerates at all due to Windows 7 processes (aero, and search) not tying up my processor during gameplay? Like a dedicated gaming XP partition.

In the same vein, is there anything process-wise I can do on Windows 7 that would keep from tying up the processor during gameplay?

Still very much appreciate the help!

Nah, the difference between XP and Windows 7 is negligible, as long as you have enough memory. 3 GB should be fine.

Also, to help with cooling, get one of those cooler stands, or just make your own. Probably help a ton. Even lifting it will probably help, here's some ideas.

This is the answer. The game isn't worthwhile playing at a super low res and the lowest settings anyways and it's really doubtful that that 8600 could even handle that. Why not just wait until your next laptop purchase to play the game? It's already 2 years old and will be around when you upgrade.
