Running Cat5e with electrical wire.

What is the rule for running cat5e next to electrical wire? Is there any for cat5e for network??

You're fine as long as you're an inch away. I forget the exact spec. UTP is highly resistant.

What I usually do when running in ceilings is run electrical lines in the middle of the joist (but putting holes) which I believe is code anyway...

Then data run it on the joists, not within the joist cavity. That gives a few inches of distance from electrical wire at all times. If you want to drywall then you have to put holes for the data too, but I if you put drop ceiling then you can just put hooks or w/e to hold the cables in place. I don't like using staples for data as it can damage the cable.

That electrical was already there mind you, I would normally bring it up higher. The duct was also in the way, so probably why it's lower.

6" away from 120V. 12" if you want to run Gb. Double those if it's 240V. Cross at right angles.

All, it matters not what you do or read on the intarweb. The standards are there for a reason. There is no such limit on running low voltage twisted pair parallel to power. Even in large data center environments the trays run parallel, those trays carry power, fiber, UTP.

It's UTP for a reason. It rejects noise.

Right, when you follow the standards and keep it the proper distance or more away from power it does minimize noise in the signal. They do run things parallel. More than an inch away...in their own pathways.
