Running CAS5 @ CAS4?

So I bought 1 GB of OCZ Value Series DDR2-PC5300 for my laptop. I failed to realize when ordering that the system I have takes CAS4, and this was CAS5. It's rated at 5-5-5-15, and my system runs it at 4-4-4-12.

I ran it anyways just to check, and ran Memtest86+ for two full test cycles with no errors.

I figure OCZ just rates everything new at 5-5-5-15 just because they relaxed their quality control standards to raise their yield. Is that true? Am I safe?

Your not going to hurt the RAM by running it at the tighter timings. It is just not guaranteed to. It sounds like you have ran it to what you consider stable so it appears you are fine.

cl4 vs cl5 isnt a big jump, you wont notice the difference apart from synthetic benchmarks. for memtest, its best to run 50 passes to ensure maximum stability imo, but hardware companies generally have a little headroom on their parts for better reliability. espeically laptop parts, since the airflow in a laptop isnt exactly great. as long as your laptop doesnt crash or is unstable, then running the ram out of spec shouldnt be a huge problem.
