Running ATI vid card on Nvidia chipset boards?

I have the ASUS A8N32-SLI M/B
Can you run a single ATI card on this board or will there be compatability issues will the Nvidia chipset? I'm talking about PCI-E cards specificly the new ATI 1900 512

No problem just that on benchmarks your score won't be as high as if you own an Nvidia video card with Nvidia chipset motherboard.

Running an X1900XT on that board right now.. Works just dandy for me. I think the "Nvidia runs faster on Nvidia chipsets" is an old wives tale.

Probably more of a marketing hype fromm nVidia. "Use our products in conjunction with our products for best results!" Everyone makes these kinds of claims basically. ATI included.

Ok I went out and bought the X1900XT ATI card and I'll be damned if i can get it to work right. I installed the drivers and card, then My onboard gigalan ports stopped working. TCP/IP is not enabled and won't let me enable it. I went in to BIOS and checked the lan cable and show a short on to of the leads. I have replaced the cable but I think its a short on the board. Also I now have 4 Lan connections one of them is a PCI-E ethernet connection? I have reinstalled Windows on another partition to see if I could correct the problem. But I get the same errors. Also There are large orange and red bands that flicker across the screen when windows boots up or i open a program. So I thought maybe the card was bad. I took it back and exchanged it. Reinstalled the new card and have the same problems.
I also ran 3dmark05 and scored 10625. I had scores in the 13500 range with my 7800GTX. Something is very wrong I fear.

Anyone have any Ideas?

I think it's stupid to have ATI on nvidia sli chipset... It's such a waste to buy wrong and expensive motherboard

Why do you say its stupid? Are you telling me that if you want to switch Vid cards to ATI that you must upgrade everything to ATI? And if so please tell me why this must be done to run an ATI card on an Nvidia chipset. There is alot more to a motherboard than video. And screams performance in all areas from the chipset to the 8 phase power and all the othe features of this board. So to say it's "stupid" to run ATI on an Nvidia sli board sounds pretty sdupid to me. Unless that is, you know of some compatibility issues with running ATI on nvidia. If so lets hear it. Thats what this thread is for.

so if i buy an VIA or Ali board, does that mean i have to buy a video card they make?

IMO SLI is kinda excess in the first place.

Shouldn't be a problem. I assume you did uninstall the NV display drivers prior to installing the ATI & have the proper power connections to M/B & vid card. You might try blowing out the slot with canned air or try the other slot. It kinda sounds like something got knocked loose or something conductive dropped on the board during the swap.

Did that and did that. I have the same issues with the other slot. Only difference is the gigalan ports work now but still show a short on 2 leads in BIOS. Board flaked out on me maybe?

for me, im going to get 1900xt would i get better performance on a board with radeon chipset? i honestly hope not.

btw, i have nforce mobo paired with 9800xt (3 years old) and never had problem with it so i doubt the whole nvidia thing

Could be, I guess you missed my edit. Might be that something conductive fell on the M/B. I fried a Pentium once installing a COAST module, there was a tiny gold sliver like a shaving in the socket, I guess it was on the terminals of the stick & I didn't check or clean it before installing.

EDIT: Do you still have the 7800 to try & see if it still works?

Nope, I wish I did. But thats the route I was thinking. I must have touched the card to the motherboard somewhere when installing. Or like you said I may have had something in the slot.

IMO SLI is kinda excess in the first place.

I think he meant that it was silly to buy an SLI board if he was going to stick a lone ATI card in there. I personally would have just gotten an Ultra board if I wasn't sure if I was going to ever go SLI or not.

Who knows. I'm running an NVIDIA card on an A8N-SLI Deluxe and my Silicon Image ethernet controller basically died too. In the BIOS mine says FAIL. So it's not related to the ATI card I don't think. Just the motherboard being retarded. Just use the NVIDIA ethernet controller instead.

I said it's stupid to use ATI card on such expensive SLI motherboard.. SLI is for dual nvidias gfx cards so what the point using ATI card on SLI motherboard.. why dont you buy crossfire if you want to use dual ATI gfx cards... If I were you, I would stay with 7800gtx that youre using.

First off, I bought an SLI board for 2 reasons. First I wanted the option to upgrade to SLI if I wanted without buying a new board down the road. And second because I was going with the 7800GTX. At the time I bought the board and the card, I didn't know that the ATI 1900xt was coming out that soon and I didn't know that it would it would take back the crown of Best vid card. So that is why I now have a ATI card in that board.
And the X1900xt beats the snot out of the 7800GTX 512 and does it for $200 cheaper.
