Running an Opteron 165 without IHS

I just bought a s939 Opteron 165 from someone in the FS/FT section and when I got it I noticed that the IHS was not attached. I started freaking out but then I did a search on google and found a couple threads on diy-street saying that yo ucan get better temps with the IHS off. So now I figure Ill just run it without the IHS, but how do I install it? Im using a thermaltake volvano 12, do I just put some AS5 on the bare cpu and then put the volcano 12 down over the cpu as if the IHS were still there? Do I need to do any modifications to the mounting bracket or do I need to get anything to put in between the bare CPU and HSF?

This is probably a stupid question but, I was thinking about lapping this opty, Im assuming that you cant lap a bare cpu? Thats just for the IHS correct?

No! Don't lap a bare CPU! You'll kill it.

I don't know that HSF, but just be careful installing it. Bare CPU's chip (and die) easily.

Ok so I put the HSF on just like normal? Dont have to do anything special since the IHS is off, other than be careful?

Yeah just be careful. Older athlons used to be bare :p Just distribute the pressure evenly and gently :p

You can cover those tiny resistors(?) with electrical tape. It should help protect them.

I mounted the HSF then took it off just to make sure it made contact, and it did not. its sitting at least 2mm maybe 3mm above the CPU. So I guess Ill have to take the mounting bracket off the mobo and shave a little off the legs to lower it down.

Have you tried contacting the seller to get more information about why it was sold with it off and any experience with how to install it? I actually thought that without the IHS you could mount it normally like you used to do before IHS were introduced. When you noticed the HSF was 2-3mm above the CPU core was that with the HSF fully tightened or just resting on top of it?

I looked back at the original FS thread and it did say "bare CPU", my dumb ass thought this ment just the cpu, not box or anything :p. After doing some research I like the idea of running it without the IHS, just got to figure out how. Yeah I though I would be able to mount it normally too and that it would be just like an older CPU. I think its just my HSF that isnt working with it, maybe there are other HSF's out there that will work with a naked CPU. And yes, with my HSF tightened down it was sitting 2-3mm above the CPU. Even when it wasnt tightened down it wasnt touching the CPU, when I took the HSF off, there was no thermal paste on it.

Well it doesnt really matter now because I fired my mobo last night trying to remove the NB HSF :p. But, I just found a local guy selling another mobo with a Zalman 7000B CPU HSF that uses its own mounting hardware so I should be able to mount that to my bare CPU no problem.

Like oops and stuff. Good luck with the new build.
