You need enough RAM to give the host and the guest the amount of ram that you want to give them. So you need whatever you would normally use, plus 4 gigabytes of RAM.

I run multiple vms, including a 4GB Windows environment, on a server with 16GB and it works fine.

You can run a 4 GB VM on an 8 GB PC.

If you have 1024 chrome tabs open in the host PC then the host PC might get laggy as Windows uses the swap file, but it should still work with 8 GB.

If you want to play (AAA game title) with (monster texture modpack) installed in the host PC while running the VM that might get laggy too but will probably still work with 8 GB. Switching to the VM might be slow because parts of its RAM were swapped out too.

Of course more RAM is better but unless the host PC is running some specialized 64-bit application that already needs 16 GB for itself you don't need 32 GB.
