running a hard drive unmounted

antness

is it ok if i test out a hard drive for a few hours outside of a case? it would be sitting on a hard surface such as a desk. will this damage it?

yes it might, because when the HD spins, it vibrates. it'd be better if you put some sort of thin sponge (like the one that came with mobo box) under it to absorb the vibration.

edit: spellin

its fine, don't worry about it, i do it all the time. if every tech out there so paranoid. we'd be all screwed.

I have 3 hdds that has been running unmounted with no problem...a Quantum drive since 97, a Seagate since 99, and a Maxtor for 18 months.

how about running an entire system without a case? i have every part for my new comp except the chassis...but i'm not going to be getting that till like 2 days before i leave for college, so i want to make sure everything is working first. and this computer i'm typing on is a laptop, so i can't borrow it's case.

i'd spread everything out on antistatic bags and try it out. will this be ok?

edit: if i do this...how do i turn the computer on..

that would be pretty funny to see, but im sure it would work.

imagine seeing a porsche without the body....heh.

I have an old 486 that I ran with out a case for 4 years with no problem till I retired it.

The current P200 beater still run flawlessly with out a case for 4.5 years with no problem.

Also no problem with the Cel 533mhz for the last 18 months (no lid on case).

How about this for size: absolutely no case at all for the Cyrix P100 pread out in & on top a pizza box for 2 years till I killed the CPU & Mobo by over clocking it.

If it is an ATX system, I just use a jumper on the two pins for the power switch to turn it on, and then put the jumper back on a second to shut it off

Whenever I copy files/OS from one HD to another I temporarily
place one of the HDs on a folded wash cloth....never had a problem..

my friend just leaves his h disk hanging by the ide cable in his case since he has no room to mount it (micro atx case)...his Maxtor's been doin good for 2 yrs now
