i have Fios, I don’t think my IP address changed too often. Server will be for friends and I.

I understand the steam cmd stuff (I think)
I don’t completely understand the port forwarding. I’ve figured out how to forward a port in my quantum gateway but do I need to direct that to the server PC?
Anyone have a good overview of what needs to be done. Google searches never have complete results.

Thank you

Yes, you need to forward the ports to the PC functioning as a server. Or use a VPN solution so that it's not visible to everyone.

Regarding forwarding ports, you'd need to consult the manual for your router. Regarding a VPN solution, I used Hamachi for years for private servers.

Is it only port forward in the router or do I need to redirect that to an IP address on my local network to the server?

With my home game servers I just do DMZ on an isolated node with windows firewall disabled. My router was rarely the issue but I did run into a lot of issues with Windows firewall and SteamCMD for whatever reason.

So long as you have a decent physical layer of security you should be fine. Give your server's LAN connection a static address and then enable DMZ for that device or manually specify the ports (forward) for whichever game you'd like to host.

I’m not too worried about machine security. Literally the thing is only going to have windows or steam os plus steam. Nothing else, it’s only going to be used as a game server.
How do I point the forwarded ports to that machine?

it's usually labeled as like a "Target" or wherever you can input the static IP of the server.

like, for my untangle router, it's Hostname, then MAC, protocol, port number, and then there's a space for IP addresses. apply the changes and you should be good. if not, try disabling the server OS firewall and run the update/run the server again.

Adding the server's IP or MAC to the pool of DMZ clients will help you troubleshoot possible firewall issues on the software end.
