running a computer outside

Would it be safe to run a normal desktop outside, on a hot day? It will be around 85-95F outside, and I should be placing the computer in the shade.

umm, it should be ok. but i've had experiences that some outside power sockets aren't as stable or don't provide enough miliamps. but just make sure it isn't near dust/dirt and it should be fine.

On a temporary basis - no problem. I would not recommend outdoors as a permanent site, however - especially here. Right now on my patio is is 100 degrees F in the shade. But, there is no moisture problem unless it falls in the pool or a T-Storm drops in.

I frequently run my laptop on the patio in the evening when it cools down a bit. It's very nice, and my aircard gets a good EVDO connection.

Some beige (or other light colored) plastic enclosures will yellow if exposed to the sun or other UV source for many hours. Dark colors will change too but not as obviously.
