Was thinking about putting a HDD in my Playstation 2. Instead of using Sony's 40gb was gonna use a 80gb. Anyway I heard Sony's is 5400RPM.

Curious if I put a 7200RPM drive in there should I be concerned with it drawing maybe more power than the PS2 can handle and it killing the system or maybe and it running hotter could it damage something? Or should I just go with a 5400 80gb?

for loading games and such, i would think having their 5400 would be fine... but i would also think the 7200 would work fine....

well I am concerned more with the 7200RPM killing my PS2 and it getting hotter and drawing more power from the system. Am sure it will work fine at first but over time could it kill the PSU in it?

you can pop in a bigger HDD? I would assume you'd have a modchip

but i would think heat would have been a factor in Sony's decision, but you realize that they probably made it so it would run in the pretty crappy conditions out there. I figure it'll be fine provided it isn't sitting on the carpet in the corner where it really can't ventilate ;)

hmmm maybe I should just look for a 5400RPM drive I guess just to be on the safe side. They are harder to come by though used. Most are 40gb and smaller. But if I ever decided to use it in my PC that would suck.

The PS2 was designed in a period of time when all that existed was ball bearing hard drives. The new FB drives comsume less power but I don't know how much less (probably not a lot). Take a look at the western digital site. They have specs for all their old drives as well as their new ones so you should be able to do a comparison.
