I have both Ad-aware Plus & the newer Microsoft's AntiSpyware Beta1.

Is it neccessary to run both Ad-Watch & Microsoft's program in the background while on the internet? (dialup) Will it provide more protection while online?
If there are no problems running both, would there be any conflicts between the two programs such as one overriding the other if they both see a similar attack, etc.

Thanks.

I really don't see the need to run either of them in the background as long as you are discreet about the sites you visit and have already immunized the system as much as possible (SpywareBlaster and Spybot).

Yes, but Spybot only deletes crap from your computer when you tell it or set it up to do so. Who want's ad windows popping up when you're web surfing? You must have either your Browser or a background working program to stop these.

I don't use the free version of Ad-aware. I use Ad-Aware Plus which has AdWatch that stops most of the Pop ups & Spam before you have to try and remove them. Go back to my first post for reference , as the post above does not answer my question.

PS: I am discreet but even well known sites such as BestBuy, etc........ Have crap pop ups! Need something Pilgrim!

Well, go back and read my post for reference. You asked if it was necessary to run both programs in the background, and I told you I didn't think it was necessary. I don't run any kind of background program like Ad-aware or MS's Antispyware Guard and don't need to.

I scan for Spyware frequently, immunize using SpywareBlaster and Spybot, use a modified Hosts file for redirection, disable Messenger, and use Firefox.

But, if you feel the need to run 2, 3, or 4 programs in the background, then by all means suit yourself. I highly doubt it will harm your popup infested system, Pilgrim.

I don't see the need to run 2 spyware @ the same time. I would just run MS Antispyware, but since you payed for your AdAware...I can see why you would want to use that as well. As for pop-up stopper...I use Firefox and its build-in popup stopper works wonder.

If you have a problem with spyware, then try

1) use a Limited account ("Restricted User" in Win2000). Take a cue from the *nix guys here :)

2) make sure you're using some reasonably good antivirus software and that you've fully configured it to use all its weapons.

3) right-click My Computer > Manage > Users & Groups > Users, right-click each of the Administrator-class accounts, and give it a strong password such as CorCentral@AT. This isn't to keep out hackers, it's to slam the door on stuff trying to appropriate the Admin powers using blank/weak passwords.

4) keep up on your Windows patching.

5) if you figure out that Site X is trying to install spyware on your computer... Doctor, it hurts when I do this... yeah. ;)

That's the formula I use at work, more or less. Tracking cookies are about the only thing we would see making it through this setup.
