Running 2405FPW at non-native resolution?

Since I'll be upgrading my whole computer in a month or two I'm going to buy a Dell Widescreen monitor. I saw the 2005FPW yesterday and wasn't really blown away by it, and since the 2405FPW is on sale I'm considering that. The problem is right now my video card is an old 9600XT. I know the max resolution is 1280x1024, which is what I'm running right now on my 1905FP. My question is can the 9600XT run the 2405FPW at 1280x1024 comfortably?

I wouldn't play any games until I get my new system. Just general internet use or maybe old games like Half Life and Call of Duty.

Are you sure the 9600XT has a max resolution of 1280X1024? My old 9600pro had a max 2d resoution of 1920X1200 which was fine for the 2405. Go to the ATI website and check. That resolution might not be showing up because you have the hide resolutions the monitor cannot support tab checked in Windows. I bet your 9600XT will run natively, the 2405. I have gamed on the 2405 at 1600X1200 and 1920X1200 and I couldn't see any real difference but I am not a hugely discriminating video fanatic. I did notice some ghosting on HD playback of Microsoft HD samples though.

Thats incorrect, 1280x1024 is the native resolution for the 1905FP, so it reports that as maximum resolution to the drivers.The 9600XT will support 2405FPW's native resolution of 1900x1200 via DVI and up to 2048x1536 analog.

The 9600XT probably supports up to 2048x1536. Don't bother trying to game at it's native res with that card, but you can definitely run Windows at native res. And you can run it at non-native resolution, either stretched out, or 1:1, but native is MUCH better.

The 9600 series cards have no inherent limits on their DVI port, so 1920x1200 is feasible. 3D speed at that resolution isn't going to be very good obviously - but you're free to run games at any lower resolution, and have either the card or the monitor scale it up - or run entirely unscaled, using only a portion of the display.

I'd recommend the latter, unscaled, use for gaming.
