Running 2 projects on a HT enabled comp **updated 1/2/06**

I know this has come up before but i don't remember the answer 😱 😕

If i have 2 HT enabled comps & want to run 2 projects, is it better to run 1 instance of each project on each comp or run 2 instances of the same project on each comp? Or doesn't it really matter?

I'm talking as a general rule here. I know it probably depends on which 2 projects you're talking about & how they use the processor.
But if you want to get specific, go right ahead 😛

I case anyone knows for sure though, i'm thinking of F@H & SoB.

Well 1 advantage to running 2 projects on 1 computer (boinc) is that you hardly ever have down time, where as if you run the same project (both instances) and that project runs out of work its down till you get more.

of course setting the cache can help.

I run 1 project on my ht boxes though.

I have had good luck running two different projects on HT. Some work together better than others. Those that use different parts of CPU do better.

But some F@H WUs take more resources than others, which could cause the other project go slower for that WU.

I have run F@H and SoB together and don't remember any problems, but it was about a year ago and I can't remember if one slowed the other more.

EDIT: For dial-up I would definately run two different projects, you will have less idle time.

When I had a P4HT a while back I ran 2 instances of seti classic and it produced a small improvement in the total number of work units done. I haven't analyzed newer projects on my HT enabled systems but I would imagine the same holds true.

Yeah, i ran 2 instances of SETI also on both of them.

I'm gunna run instances of a DC project on those... i just didn't know if i would get any benefit from running the same project on 1 comp or 2 different projects on 1 comp.

Here's what works rather well, running EON and DPAD. EON has a tendency to ZZZ if you run it you know what I mean but when it does then DPAD takes over. It works very well, just look at the stats.

Um, question about hyperthreading.
I have 2 similar Dell Series 3000 computers. Both of them show HT enabled in BIOS. Both of them show 2 processors listed in Device Manager.

CPUZ shows 2 processors in the "Processor Section" (CPU #1 & CPU #1 logical) on 1 computer only. 1 processor only is listed on the other computer under CPUZ.

Task Manager shows similar. 1 comp shows 2 graphs on the Performance tab the other only shows 1 graph.

I set up 1 instance of F@H on both, 1 usesd 50% of the CPU, the other uses 100%.

If HT is enabled in BIOS then that should be the end of it, correct? BOIS overrides whatever anything else it telling you, right? Or not nessessarily?

I would say, that if both computers are running with the same Motherboard.....HT is not enabled on one. If they are different....one MB may not support HT or the processor is not HT capable. Also check to see if you sellected "run two processes" in your project. If this doesn't help, I have a program I downloaded from Intel to check th HT processes. I'll be glad to post the link.

Well, since i'm only running 1 instance of F@H on each...

When i ran SETI classic this was my most productive computer, running 2 instances putting out about 24/day.

I read somewhere that if it listed 2 processors in Device Manager then HT was enabled so i never questioned it when i bought the computer. The CPUs were supposed to be HT P4 3.0Ghz.

Mother boards are different. Both are Dell brand name according to CPUZ:
Model# ON6381
Model# OR8060

I appreciate everyones help 🙂

Need your serial number for each and /or exact model #.....send me a IM. Need that to research since I don't have a Dell account. You must have done this ...but sometimes i miss stuff and others have found what I needed to know doing the same search.

By the way, are these networked and have you tried to syncronize the two computers?
