Running 2 Processes in SETI...does it do much?

Just wondering about the above (CLI 3.03)...I probably wouldn't do it on a machine that I use for other stuff....just one of my test machines that does almost nothing here at work....a P4 2.0ghz....would I get an increase in WU's if I did 2 Processes....what sort of % increase?

Cheers,

Corm

There won't be any real benifits of running 2 processes. In fact, you may even notice a slight drop in production, with 2 processes fighting for the already limited memory bandwidth etc

Best to just run 1 instance of it :)

What if your processor is one of the hyperthreading-enabled Pentium 4s or Xeons?

Or, has this been discussed already?

<-- gropes in the dark for the search button. ;)

HyperThreding makes the OS see it as 2 processors, when it is in fact one. That means that there is only one part of the CPU that will do the Seti stuff, but being used by 2 processes. It would be best to have 1 Seti process, and another project that uses another part of the CPU for it's calculations. That way you'd be maximising the effectiveness of it. HyperThreading is at it's best when doing two different things :)
