My 6800GT is getting old, and isn't really happy to run at 1680x1050. But it usually gets a good framerate running 1440x900. I tried it briefly today with HL2 and it seemed to look OK, but didn't really have time to mess with it.

Anybody else try this? I guess it's just a matter of how good the scaler is on your monitor.

You said it. :) I have a Dell 2407WFP (1920x1200) and I think the scaler is superb. I get better framerates at lower resolutions, but running at a lower res is not what I bought a big monitor for! :D

Are you sure it's not the video card that's doing the scaling? Anyways, non-native resolutions = free anti-aliasing FTW!

Huh? Non-native resolutions = massive aliasing FTL!

I would think slightly lower settings at native resolution would look so much smoother and clearer, in my experience.

I'm currently playing Stalker at 1440x900 on my 1920x1200 monitor - I think it looks fine. I guess it just depends on how picky you are

As long as you use the same aspect ratio, scalers today should be ok. My 2407 is being used at 1680x1050 for games, and it looks spectacular. Even 4:3 resolutions look fine. However, doubt anyone will deny that native looks best.
