Runners high?

I just started jogging a month ago. I started off doing 20-30min runs. My last couple runs were 40 and 50mins. How long does it take to get the "runner's high"? I think I've finally achieved it! After around 30min I think, I started to feel warm all over, and any fatique I felt in my legs went away. Today I stopped after 5 laps around this park (my all time best) and I felt I could have kept on going for more. Anyone have any more info on this?

Also... my best runs have all been when I was thinking of code :). Today I forgot what lap I was on temporarily because I was designing a website DB backend in my head. I think I've definitely caught the running bug now. I wasn't planning on running today. It's raining, and about 4 C. I had an hour to kill before golf was on TV, so I decided to put on my runners, stretch for a bit, and killed 50 min with a healthy activity :)

I'm also wondering what's the best thing to eat after a run... I know drinking water is fairly obvious. I'm guessing a high carb snack is probably best to replenish the energy reserves?

yeah......for me I basically just stare straight forward and there's nothing but my rythmic breathing and scenery rushing past my head. It's like being dizzy and light-headed....yet not like it at all at the same time. My concepts of fatigue and time basically fade away.

I dunno any one thing that makes it happen for me. Sometimes I'm just thinking about something else, sometimes it's the scenery and the "rushing" feeling of stuff going by my head, other times it's the rythmic pat-pat-pat of my feet in time with my breathing.

One thing's for sure is that it's a cool feeling.

For me, its quite different. When I'm in good form, and after mile 3, I seem to establish a 'zone'. There are times that I feel I am looking down on myself running, like a bird's eye view. Its quite surreal, and difficult to explain. I can hear myself breathe, but about nothing else. Definately a neat experience, and it doesn't happen all the time.

I think you should stop taking LSD before you go on a run ;)

Then again... I did say that I need to think about code while running.

It didn't happen for me until I started running longer than 40min.

For me my legs just seem to be going on their own, and yah it's a great feeling about 4.5 miles for it really kicks in for me, but I have to be doing better than a 7min pace. After about nine miles I get fatigued usually and I settle in to a jog.

I always thought the runners high was just the natural endorphins that kick in after you're done? Eh, I usually only run for about two miles at a 6.5 mph or so pace so maybe I'm just not doing enough to get what some of you are describing. I do sometimes get in a zone where it just feels like everything is perfectly in time and running becomes sort of effortless but that's about it.

I've experienced my runners high after a moderate run (30-40min) at 70+%. With a last kick at 100%. Its like a sense of euphoria for me.

I read on some medical site that there is a chemical present when you have a runner's high that is also present when smoking cannabis.

Runner's high is just the rush of endorphins that happens after you've been running for a while, usually t least 40 minutes. I actually don't think I've ever experienced that, as it's supposed to be a feeling of euphoria and indefatiguability. I can't say I've ever felt like that, and I partake in 40+ minute runs nearly everyday. However, at the end of races, I usually experience a sort of "out of body" experience, where I'm sprinting as fast as I can, faster than I could in just a 100m sprint, but I can't feel, see or hear anything except for the finish line in front of me. It's like I get tunnel vision on the goal, I hear nothing and I can't even feel my legs turning or my feet hitting the ground. Then I usually spew my guts out afterward. I love that feeling :)
