OK, I remember setting a custom QuakeIII resolution for my old ATI Rage Mobility 128 so it would run at exactly half the resolution of my high resolution laptop display. It woked. The image would scale perfectly and the quality was exactly as if my native resolution was half of my actual resolution.
Unfortunately, it doesn't work with most games on modern high-resolution widescreen displays. For instance, Half-Life 2 loads at 640x480 when I set 840x525 (-width 840 -height 525). These days, it's more important than ever. After all, gamers want 2405FPW and 3007WFP displays! So far, only F.E.A.R. seems to support this kind of thinking with it's "pixel doubling" option (just half the resolution and crank up the AA). Other games often only show standard 4:3 resolutions and ONLY the custom resolution for the wide 16:9 or 16:10 aspect.
This is getting ridiculous. Can I edit an INF or something to make my monitor appear as a 840x525 display to Windows and therefore the games that show only the native resolution option? Can I use a utility like PowerStrip to force a resolution? Any idea how I can reliably half the resolution in modern games?
I now also game on a 1280x800 laptop and the X1400 kinda chokes on many games. I'd rather sacrifice resolution than graphic features so, if possible, I know I'll be using it there too.
