RunDLL32 error when right clicking and choosing properties?

Uh hey guys- yesterday i tried to access my mail via Eudora and all the sudden it kept crashing

So i figured "whatever" and I'm using outlook now

now i right click on the desktop and and go to properties and all the sudden I get a RUNDLL32 error. Everything still works but I can't access the stuff to change my moniter resolution b/c it crashes immediately.

I'm win2ksp4...rig is in the sig...

any ideas? I'm kinda worried b/c I dun have the time anymore to reboot it all (college)

Might I add that sometimes its fixed and others its not....

oddly enough Eudora won't work either (well it loads but going to the inbox proves fruitless)...but when i can get the display panel to work so will Eudora...

Does that help anyone who could help me out?

Bumped enough, and someone might answer!

This appears to be a crash in Explorer.exe brought on by a crappy 3rd party .dll plug-in "shell extension." Explorer.exe is what provides the "Desktop" to you in the form of interaction with it... i.e., right click menus, drag-and-drop, etc.

So clearly the crash is happening because "xplugin.dll" is failing somehow. From the look of the stack trace, it looks like the stack is being blown away... the best the crash dump can tell is that the call failed at "CreateProcessW+6a8". This can happen for any number of reasons, all of which are the fault of "xplugin.dll".

If I were you, I'd try to find out as much information about this mysterious file called "xplugin.dll" on your system as you can. It's probably located in \windows\system32, so you should be able to see who provided it, and if you're lucky it will list a manufacturer. To get this, just pull up the file's property page (File->properties).

If possible, you should try to un-install the Application or software component that put that particular file on your system. If that is not possible, then a workaround is to go to a command prompt, change the directory to \windows\system32, and try typing:

"regsvr32 /u xplugin.dll"

and see if it succeeds. If so, then you should delete xplugin.dll, and then reboot your computer.

But like I said, the FIRST thing you should try to do is find WHAT software installed that .dll on your computer, and try to uninstall the software the traditional way. If it's software you MUST have, perhaps a re-install will fix the xplugin.dll file, which could have gotten corrupted somehow.

That's pretty sketchy. I think you should nuke it.

Try the regsvr32 method I mentioned first.

If that doesn't work, just delete it, and search through the registry for ALL references to "XPlugin.dll" and delete them too.

See if that helps.
