Check Start Up Folder for Dead Links would be my first step.

You might try a fixboot in the recovery console.

how would you achieve this?

You would put your windows xp disk in and when you have the option to repair you chose r then that takes you in the recovery console. then you type the command fixboot c: if c is your target drive
