For clarification, all of the files needed to run the two original games -XCOM 1 and 2, are already availabe to download in the mirror provided by TheOmegaCode (cheers).

I did not bother with X-COM 3 though. I tried it, and I didnt like it, beside there was no specific fix made to make it work with NT- based OS, so it wouldnt work anyway.

Eh, the most of the credit should go to the creator of the fixes and the author of the website to which was mentioned in the starting message.....

Hmm, it is buggy, and it crashes sometimes for me to... but you can play the lengend.....

back on topic, xcom retail works just fine on my win2k boxen. its just that on a 1.54GHz athlon everything scrolls too fast to be very usable.

You know you can change that in the options menu. I'm not smart enough to do that though, after I got used to it, I sped up my curson in my OS...

I am in March now, but I am making money already selling the laser cannons - this is the best weapon to produce and sell. It manufactures very fast, and you can make about $40.000 while selling one.....Already have 150 engineers producing only for sale...
Aslo 2 bases and 100 scientists...
I will stop when all of my soldiers will have 100 TUs and 100 kills each!

You can beat the game with average soldiers. You can also beat the game w/ just one base.

I'm playing on "superhuman" BTW.

WHAT IS XCOM: UFO DEFENSE?

It's only the first, and best game of its kind. Turn based strategy, in the same vein as Fallout: Tactics and Jagged Alliance 2. But, IME, more intuitive (or maybe I just played it way so much).

I know when it first came out, even though the options to make the difficulty harder (superhuman, etc.) were selectable, they didn't actually work. Yeah, you could choose them, and the Prima guide book, which I have, even spec'd them. BUT, THEY DIDN'T DO SQUAT. Still played exactly the same as the easier level. I know. I bitched on Microprose's BBS about it enough (on a slow modem, no less).

Does anyone know if this version actually let's difficulty selection make things more difficult? If so, I'd play it again.

TFTD: I dunno. Never could get into it for some reason. It just wasn't the same.

I wish they would make a new X-COM. X-COM Alliance would have been cool, if the company wasn't bought out and project put on hold. I played the first one and Apocolyps to death. Anyone that has to ask what X-COM is has to be a total n00b to computer gaming.

Some extra install info...
To play on another computer, just copy and paste the folders from the original installation and you are all set. Right now I am playin on my laptop... but 320x240 resolution looks kinnda blurry on TFT...
Do not try to play using the pad or the eraser... get the regular USB mouse, it is much better...
Edit: It might be a game of choice on a long trip or flight!!!!

Mine looks pretty nice on TFT. It's only 800x600 native though. :)

I agree on the eraserhead pointer thing though. That thing drives me nuts! I wish I had a touchpad sometimes. Oh well, I have one of those mice that you wear on your finger like a ring! ;)

Does anyone know of any programs that slow down your comp to help with things such as scrolling speed and animation speed?

Even when I set scroll speed to 1 it's still pretty much unplayable.

CPU Killer and Mo'Slo are the only ones I can think of right now. They're both around $20.

I don't know if there are any free ones out there.

Awesome! I haven't played X-Com since I moved to Win95. This game has one of the best intros in that day.

I must admit, the modern midi rendition sounds a little different. :)

X-COM 3 now works in Windows XP!

I found this thread at X-COM Tactical. The instructions are there. The problem with XP is that it does not like direct access to the CD drive, so you have to crack it. I installed the game off of my Apocalypse CD and then installed the crack it runs, but the sound sucks. VDMSound works to fix that. The directions on installing that program are in the thread. Good luck!
