Run a VM off of a USB 3.0 hard drive?

Our new server has run right out of room and I'm looking for good ways to expand its capacity without adding significant cost. The only thing running on the expanded space would be a VM of our old retired terminal server that is used purely to access legacy programs if a client comes in and wants a 2001 tax return prepared (accounting office), so it's not that it's going to be bearing a lot of load.

Any thoughts on running something like that off of a USB 3.0 hard drive? USB 3.0 itself should be plenty fast enough, but I'm more worried about errors in data transfer, etc. Will that be able to run non-stop for a year, or will it be all buggy?

Host system will be a Win2008R2 Dell T710 running VMware Server 2.0.

Thanks

errors in data transfer? as long as your usb3 cable is shielded, then you should be good to go indefinitely.

eSATA would be another option.
Are there any external HD housings that include both: eSATA & USB 3.0 connections?
But: would also probably need an internal cooling fan, if it were left powered on continually.
