I'm not so sure if that is good news or not..... I heard that the D70 had a small Moiré / maze artifact problem from the dpreview.com review of the camera. Did they fix that with a firmware upgrade, yet?

well yes and no, the firmware upgraded didnt adress it IIRC, but its not there all the time, i have seen it 2 times in 4000 photos i have taken with mine, and it is eaisily fixable if you shoot RAW and do a lil post processig

and hey nothings perfect all cameras have some issues

I hope they learned their lessons from D70 and don't rush in this time. After all, only fools rush in and Nikon had never been a fool before D70. Once again, what good are amazing specs if a camera has bunch of flaws?
Well, I'm sure that Nikon has learned their lessons, however I'll have to wait and see.

35mm has been passed for quite a while now by dslrs (6mp dslr). do a search here and you will find threads about it.

25MP? You wanna make a wall paper with that?

Anway, the quality is about quality, not all about megapixels. You could have 100MP that looks like crap.
So many people think quality is about the megapixels, thus many companies squeeze ever high mega pixel in tiny CCDs. That's like 8086 cpu running at 3Ghz.

Yeah, because some "expert" on the internet says 6MP DSLR > Provia 100F, all the digital-is-king-film-is-dead fanboys jump on the bandwagon. Because some "expert" says that 25MP is needed to match 35mm film, all the traditionalists jump on that bandwagon.

Reality is much less clearly defined, unfortunately. Properly exposed and scanned fine-grained transparency film can beat 6MP digital, but the 1Ds (and 14n, when used under it's very limited set of favorable conditions - basically in the studio) come out ahead of 35mm and get pretty close to 645 territory.

Oh, and I certainly don't think Nikon will be doing all of that. The D2X, yes, but it will likely be in the 12-16MP range. An update to the D100 to compete with the 20D, yes, that is quite likely. Thom Hogan predicted that the F6 would make an appearance at the olympics. That didn't happen; I would kind of doubt that Nikon would do much more in the film arena... not that I'd argue if they came out with a hybrid film/digital F6, of course. 😉

Everything else on the list is in the It Won't Be Happening category, as far as I'm concerned.

you cant do the digital vs film arguement on which one looks better on a computer screen because digital almost always wins unless the film is scanned on on a drum scanner and thoes cost upwards of $100k

the real compairsion is on print quality, and i have yet to see a digital camera make a 30x40 or greater print that looks as good as 35mm provia or Velvia, they arnt even close to medium and large format yet, and its not the printer even the ones of the high end canons and epsons and even light jets are nothing at sizes greater then 30x40

i have made a few 30x40 prints from my D70 and they look great printed from a Epson 9500, but fill is still better

the 20mp digital backs for 645s come close but a 6 foot print from a 4x5 is still untouchable for digital

ProviaFan: im with you i beleive that nikon must release the D200 to compeat with the 20D and teh D2X is long over due, thoes are the only 2 i really see happening the D2H upgrade is the next one

the rest of thoes i dont see happening, the F5 is a great camera and we dont need a f6 yet and i dont see nikon makeing a full frame DSLR any time soon either

* Nikon D3 - All new DSLR body, full frame, 15 Megapixels. Nikon's new flagship camera will level the premium side of the DSLR playing field with Canon and Kodak Professional's full-frame offerings.

* Nikon F6 - All new 35mm film body based on the D3 Digital SLR. This time their top-end film camera will be be based on their top-end Digital SLR instead of vice-versa.

* Nikon D200 - 8.25 Megapixel camera officially will replace the D100. 5 FPS, 1/500th flash synch speed, equipped with Nikon's D1X-proven Multi-CAM1300 autofocus module 5 point AF sensor, 24 frame Jpeg buffer.

* Nikon D2HS - An improved D2H with an all new (different) 4.1 Megapixel sensor. Stunning high ISO quality up to ISO 3200 plus more performance enhancements.

* Nikon D2X - An 8.2 Megapixel version of the D2HS. Double the D2HS horizontal pixel count, much like the D1X sensor was set up compared to the D1/D1H. Aimed squarely at Canon's 1D MkII.

* Nikon D2H hardware upgrade - Much like Kodak Professional did with its original DCS Pro14n, Nikon will offer an opportunity (at a price) for existing D2H owners to upgrade their cameras to the improved D2HS sensor and performance features. Upgraded cameras will have a new badge added to the D2H logo to identify the upgrade.

* Another Nikon D2H Firmware upgrade. For those who don't want to do the D2HS hardware upgrade, another firmware tweak to improve the D2H.

* Nikon D70 - No changes. This camera is doing fantastic just as it is.
That's just really awesome.

I love it when companies support their products to the fullest possible extent.

Wish they would have done that with the D1 (upgrade to d1x or d1h 🙁)

man I cant because my D70 is becoming obsolete soon. With film SLRs, if you buy the top of line one, you are set for a loooooong time, and they hold their resale values. DSLR is changing all that!
