This is what I heard.

Window Longhorn recommand 512MB ram while window XP only recommand 256 MB

Is this true?

I have not seen anything official about system requirements for "Longhorn", the next-gen Microsoft OS that is currently still in development. Rumors say that they will recommend 512MB of RAM and you will need at least a DX9 video card to run their new GUI (although a legacy GUI will be provided for older cards). It's all just speculation, though.

Probably. Each new generation of Windows has needed double the RAM of the last one to work at full speed.

95: 16 MB (before integrated browser)
98: 32 MB
ME: 64 MB
2000: 128 MB
XP: 256 MB

Each will run with less, but with enough disk swapping for virtual memory to be annoying.

Yeah, there's the "minimum recommended" which will be on the box (512), and then the above, which I would call "recommended".

the minimums on anything have always been a joke. my setup uses 175-180 MB just sitting there. ATI drivers up that to 200. the highest i've seen was doom 3 at about 900. i don't do major photoshop/audio/video editing.

i heard the next windows will also require a decent vid card just to run the GUI. there will be a stripped down version for lamers.
