Expected, but still a pity. This will greatly impact the adoption rate for DX12.

I'm still stuck with Win 7 due to the fact that the software I use to work remotely is, as far as I'm aware, only supported by 7 and not 8/8.1.

Since I'm in the middle of building my first gaming PC, this is kind of throwing a wrench in my plans. My goal was to build a decent gaming PC that can be used for work, as my 15" gaming laptop isn't well suited for work.

You could always half ass it and build a windows 7 virtual machine to connect to your remote computer.

Never understood people's love of that bloated pig Windows 7, when Windows 8.1 is superior in every conceivable manner.:\

Better two years after it was released..... Who would want to move to a desktop OS with a tablet and mobile UI? It was a huge gaffe on MS's part.

Either way it's no surprise that DX12 isn't coming to Win7. Many of us speculated this when DX12 was announced. MS was asked several months ago if Win7 would support DX12 and they punted on the question with a non-answer answer. I personally don't care. My plan was always to skip Win8 and upgrade on the next version.

Mainstream support ends Jan 13. I don't think DX12 will be out before that.

Even if DX12 got ready before that date, I guess they won't release it except after that date
They must force the millions of Win7 users to upgrade, they won't ever repeat the WinXP long life thing.

I'd literally curse MS everyday, if they'd force us to move to a Win8-like OS
I'm a PC-Desktop user, keep the trash smart-phones-features away of my PC, Microsoft!

Oh for heaven's sake, stop living in the past. Win 8.1 is much more desktop friendly, and there are a number of free or low-cost start menu add-ons that make using 8.1 very similar to 7. Maybe you should actually investigate these things before spouting off obsolete information?

Aww jeez.... not again. Forced obsolescence just like Vista & DX... *sigh*

Are you really surprised?..Win7 mainstream support ends Jan 2015 and EOL 2020,gamers have always had to upgrade for video cards/cpus etc and they cost far more then an OS or game ,DX12 just follows same path like Vista/Win7 that had newer DX over XP etc...

It's really not an issue for a gamer.

Except the interface, you mean?

Come on it's not hard even if you use this,

I'm sure you can handle it ;),getting back to DX12 it's nothing new in what Microsoft are doing and I bet DX14 etc will probably require new OS ,just as well gamers are use to upgrading :) .

Why should you take a perfectly fine OS and "upgrade" it so that it needs a third party add-on to function easily? I never accepted the hatred for Win 8 until my wife purchased a laptop with win 8 and I tried to help her learn use it. Now I understand it perfectly. Even the much maligned Vista was much easier to transition to than Win 8. And we did upgrade to Win 8.1, and it still was a confusing, frustrating system to use.

We are getting off topic here ,just remember Win7 was the last desktop OS,Microsoft are now on modern hybrid OS that covers it all for Win8/10,11 etc...

Personally Win8 was easy to use with or without a third party Start Menu, maybe its because I'm an old guy that as had to adapt since the calculator was invented ;) .

Again DX12 on new OS is not an issue,I also believe pricing will be free or cheap so again not an issue.

Leaving DOS starting GUI Windows 3 FAT 8/16, other then Win95B Fat 16/32-Bit and eating up volume with NTFS, MicroSoft Window's 7 has to be one of greatest PC OS's ever conceived.

DOS access 32GB Volume Partitioned Storage Drives are still my primarily BackUps. - FU MS.

The Old MS Registry Cleaner 3.11A is still probably the best Reg-Cleaner's ever but you have to know your system.

I worked on the Installation and UN-Installation of DX within Win and tested DX.

I put in over a year into DX3 WinSE development and MS never paid me a dime.

I'm absurdly sure if I downloaded a DX12 installation I could make it work on Win7.

Win 8.1 is better in everyway except the UI, why press more keys when with win 7 it only took one key press to search. Thankfully Win 10 is bringing it back.

Press more keys? For which command? It's either the same or less keys.

IMO peoples poor reaction to 8.1 is just poorly informed nonsense. 8.1 is faster, supports more modern standards, and with the settings set to log into to the desktop you can get around the OS quicker than Win 7. People just didn't bother to take the time to learn it.

What Microsoft OS requires you to have an MS account?

Little off topic but

Since Win8 they prefer you to use a Microsoft account to sign in and sync between your devices. Its like what the Apple Id has been doing for ages now.

But you can also sign in with just a local account if you which, though in 8.1 they where sneaky and hide it so it was not as easy to find, but either by disconnecting from the internet or go and say to create a new one and skip will allow you to login as a local account

Never seen this at all I have no idea what you're talking about. These things tend to get blown out of proportion.

I did. But I'm living in the past. I used 98 until December 2004, and XP until October 2009. I was hoping to break my 98 record with 7, but it looks like I'll have to go 10 next year, so it'll be close.

OS price never been an issue for a lot of us, we're just scared of what could MS could force us to use in the future, forcing to abandon some features and customization ability - taking off Aero and replace it with all those flashy colors to hurt our eyes, is just an example.

I think there is one solution to this, spin a new product line to please the smart-phone users with whatever gadgets / touch-features they'd ever like to see, and call the other basic / standard one as a Business edition or whatever.
Should Apple go and change the layout / colors of Mac OS to please a candidate users and screw the old ones ? I don't like that idea :)

What about installing that software on a win7 VM and run 8.1 as your main OS?
