No clue if this is true or not, so don't start bashing on me, but i've got some friends who were talking to employees at Electronic Botique, and they said that PS2 was going to be scrapped by the end of next year or something, because the processing power of the system is no where near that of other recent systems.

Personally, I think this is a load of crap, since I personally havn't heard about this. This also seems like a horrible buisness move on Sony's part, so I can't imagine them doing this. Anyone else heard anything, or do I just have misinformed friends?

Actually, it really depends on how much the X-Box gains in popularity. The Sony CEO said that if it becomes a blockbuster, they won't hold anything back and bring the PS3 to the market sooner than expected

Yes, but considering the Playstation 2 is selling better than both the Gamecube and Xbox, even during their launch weeks, I don't see Sony coming to that.

The only system that's visually above the rest is the GameCube. The X Box's games aren't pushing that many more poly's or special effects than PS2's games (Devil May Cry, GT3, MGS2).

Some people come up with the craziest rumors.

I was in Walmart a couple weeks ago and some woman had asked the store employee for an XBOX. They were currently sold out and she wonders over to where her son was playing the demo unit. Another kid, about 10 or 12 is standing there watching. She asks him, while her son is still playing, if he has the XBOX. Then she asked him if it was better than the PS2.

His response, and I'm not making this up, was this: "Well, the XBOX has better graphics. They look real good. But the Playstation 2 has more games and can burn DVDs. You can make DVD movies and then watch them on your DVD player. It's supposed to be real cool. I'm going to get one for Christmas."

At this point, I had to leave...I didn't want to listen to that kid anymore. He was an idiot.

hmm, I really doubt they sold more PS2's during the first week Xbox and GC were released... They might be right now though, but it's hard to know.

Are you joking?

As for the rumor, I doubt it's true. But they may drop it earlier than expected if Xbox and GC completely take over the market and they're not selling any PS2's, but I don't think that'll happen either.

A bunch of rumors from GC and Xbox zealots. PS2 will be supported next year, like the PSone is still supported now.

During the first two weeks of their availibility, the Playstation 2 sold more units than either the Gamecube or Xbox (not combined, but solo).

I'll get you a news piece in a second.

I think they'd lower the price and compete as a low-budget system before they would scrap the entire thing

Well, in all likelihood the PS2 is gonna be king of the hill for at least another year. At that point, X-Box and/or Gamecube will likely release some absolutely killer game(s) that'll put them in the lead. PS2s are selling like crazy right now since the PS2 has hit it's stride, as has been mentioned in the numerous console threads, with games like GTA3, MGS2, FFX, ABC, 123, DoReMi, etc.

Is there really a point in discontinuing this system now? I don't see one. We all know a PSX3 will come out eventually and it'll be better than the competition anyways.

Development of the PS3 is still a couple years away. Even if they wanted to scrap the PS2 and get the PS3 out, it would be a minimum of a year and half. Hardware isn't capable of making a giant leap right now. The XBOX has just about the latest in hardware (and GameCube, as well) advances, so all they would be doing is building another system on par with the XBOX. And if you don't the market can support three systems, it def. cannot support a two year life expectancy for the actual console themselves.

This isn't the exact story I was looking for (I saw one somewhere giving a side by side comparison) but here. 638,000 in two weeks.

I was at the gym drinking some gatorade after the company basketball game last week and heard a group of teenager talking about the video games. One of the girls asked "Do you have an Xbox?" Here is the response she recieved from one of the guys "Hell no! Microsoft is using Windows XP on the Xbox and it using an updated version of the Super Nintendo for their graphics. And none of their game are really 3d like the Playstation 2! They just look like their 3d, but they're not. Also, you only get to hear the sound out of your left speaker with the Xbox because it only has mono sound. I'm keeping my Playstation 2 because it's supposedly the fastest computer ever built, I read that it could power a small country in one of my gaming magazines. It's AT LEAST 10x faster than my parents computer and 2x faster than any super computer."

At this point, I just got fed up and had to walk out. Why do people feel the need to pump up their own system? OK fine, you decided to the get the Gamecube. Why did you decide? Was it the hype that made up your mind, was it graphics, was it features, etc... just because you made a decision to purchase a system, doesn't mean it's the best.

People always defend the products they buy. Why? They don't want to hear that what they bought isn't the best. All they'll believe is it is the best and always will be.

Fact 1) Despite 20 million+ PS2s sold, the PS1 has yet to be scrapped and is still seeing new games.

Fact 2) Both the X-Box and GC outsold the PS2 on their launch week, however not by a huge margin.
That week, Sony sold roughly 200,000-300,000 units and an incredible 810,000 games.

Fact 3) From Nov. 25th to Dec. 1st Sony sold 241,000 PS2s, Microsoft sold 175,000 X-Boxs and Nintendo
sold roughly 80,000 Gamecubes.

Source: Quotes from Credit Suisse First Boston (CSFB) posted on Gamespot... however they don't include
sales figures from Walmart. Many of you may have noticed that Walmart is pushing the PS2 in all of
their television ads.

The PS2 isn't going anywhere. Sony may eventually lose their week to week sales lead sometime late
next year, or in 2003, but Microsoft and Nintendo aren't going to overtake the PS2's userbase.

I see the Sony fanboys have showed up en masse.

I don't know if "scrapped" is the proper word. After all the archaic 1996-era PSOne is still being sold. But PS2 should now be nearing its peak in terms of dominance and overall market opinion. Give the XBox and GC a little time for some more units to ship out of the factories and by Xmas next year, PS2 will be positioned as a has-been. 20 million units shipped worldwide, yes, but only 6 million in North America. Remember that so many Japanese bought the PS2 for its DVD playing capabilities.

Okay, time for me to talk. First off: Genocide: How can you say gamecube is the best graphically? the wave race game for it looks like the game from 64 with a little more ram. Secondly: Some people are short sighted and tell people to buy the PS2 b/c it has more games, but give the Xbox another 6 months and it'll have its own library of killer games. Lastly: Xbox isn't getting its fair shake w/ parents shopping for systems. I work at circuit city on and off during school, and its surprising how many parents are coming in right now looking for a new system and have no clue about any of them; most of them want Gamecube b/c they recognize the Nintendo name. Etc...

Well, those numbers are what Sony shipped to stores. Take the first week the Xbox was available, they say they shipped 317,000 units, which is about what Xbox had available in stores on launch day. Nintendo said they had ~700,000 GC available at launch...

The problem with those numbers is it doesn't really represent what was being sold in stores during that week, and what was on the shelves... From what I saw, Xbox and GC were flying off the shelves in the first days they were available, while PS2 simply kept its regular sales rate, so I have a hard time believing they beat Xbox or GC during their launch week.

But now that the launch excitement has died, I wouldn't be surprised if they were selling more PS2's...

piku - those numbers are from Sony, obviously biased. Nintendo announced they sold out the 700,000 GC's in under a week. That has as much credibility as Sony saying they sold 350,000 PS2's in the XBox and GC launch week.

The thing is, with the PS2, that number is pretty accurate since there were none left on the shelves! I couldn't find a PS2 around for a long while, so pretty much all of the shipped units got sold.
