Yankees plan to build new stadium

by Anne Michaud

The New York Yankees plan to announce within the next two weeks that they want to build a new, $750 million stadium across the street from Yankee Stadium. The new stadium would be in McCombs Dam Park.

According to sources close to the deal, the team will ask for $450 million in public infrastructure investment to build a hotel and conference center, a new Metro North stop, and a ferry landing, as well as three new parks elsewhere in the Bronx. Under state law, the team must replace the parkland it uses.

The team will likely seek to finance the facility by issuing tax-exempt Industrial Development Authority bonds. Sources say revenue from the new stadium would more than pay off the bonds. The Yankees were at first looking at a design that would have increased luxury boxes to 70. But the design did not work well, and the team is now planning 50 to 52 skyboxes. A spokesman for the team says the Yankees are continuing to work out the details with the Bloomberg administration and that an announcement is expected in the coming weeks.

According to sources, Bronx Borough President Adolfo Carrion played a major role in bringing the city and the Yankees together.

PLEASE. Do you have any idea how many other teams have new stadiums? Besides, $450 million of the $750 million total will be paid by the city, not the Yankees.
Personally, I love Yankee Stadium just the way it is.
Should be fun to see the Mets' reaction to this.

Wasn't this exact stadium plan as well as the future home of the Mets shown years ago?? I remember watching a joint press conference with representatives from the Mets and Yanks showing off the new stadium designs. Both looked really nice and both had retractable roofs and the new Mets stadium would have a retractable field. I remember the new Mets stadium design being an old school Ebbets field look on the outside but state of the art in the inside.

I used to play at McCombs Dam Park when I was a kid. I'm sure some people won't be happy that the park will be gone since its usually VERY crowded with kids but I think its about damn time the Yanks and Mets get a stadium.. ESPECIALLY the Mets. I love the Mets, but Shea is a freakin dump.

List them, by price.
And this one on top of a yearly(and rising) payroll that ridiculous.
Please indeed. No wonder no one watches baseball anymore. And I used to be a HUGE baseball fan.

No point of building the Mets a new stadium.
Waste of money to build one for them to lose in.

From what I understand, all those plans were scrapped after 9/11.

I imagine that the park will eventually move over to where Yankee Stadium is now.

Baseball ratings are at its highest in years last time I checked and the All-Star game did very well. Last seasons playoff ratings were through the roof though it died down when it boiled to the Yanks and Marlins (everyone was dying to see Boston/Chicago).

Why does it make a difference?

What does this have to do with the Yankee payroll? Does a new stadium somehow hurt other teams?

Nobody, huh? Have you taken a look at this years attendance numbers?

Retraction, relocation, etc. Half the teams posting losses year after year. I'd say that's "no one" watching. The big markets aren't the people I'm talking about.
I suppose a park could be necessary, I haven't seen Yankee Stadium up close to determine. Might as well spend the money before someone else can I guess. :(

I understand what you mean, but I think this season will be a bit different since there are many teams contending for both divisions and the wild card. The NL East and West are still tight as is the AL West and Central...plus you have plenty of teams bunched up for the wild card race, which should translate to higher attendence and ratings as the season continues.

I certainly hope so, for the sake of all the other teams/markets. I want to be a fan again, but something's gonna have to change.
Anyone know when the current CBA runs out?

Mets are contending? Maybe if they throw John Franco off a bridge and they get Benson.

Don't know about Benson...but Franco can jump off the Brooklyn Bridge anytime he wants. I hope he brings Stanton along with him.

It's funny you pick those two, by chance no doubt.

My point must look like a speck in the sky to you guys.

Remember the good ol days when teams like Cleveland and Toronto and Oakland were well over 2.5mil every year, as were the Yankees, Dodgers, and Braves, and everyone was happy because there was a semblance of parity and the teams that made the playoffs couldn't be forecasted three years in advance? New York actually used players from their farm system and Kansas City would rattle off 18 wins in a row sometimes. Free agents like Greg Maddux would be offered a contract from multiple teams, some of which were very small markets trying to build a playoff team.

Ya, that's what I want back. And its not gonna happen.
