Saw this over at OCN.

According to OBR, Sapphire has cancelled the production of 6GB Toxic graphics card.
Card was offered for $699, which was quite high, even for a 6GB card. Since it did not find many owners and the production seemed to be pointless the company has decided to drop this project once and for all.
While the card is still listed on Sapphire website as new, you may find it hard to purchase it. Even Newegg marked the product as discontinued.
Sapphire TOXIC HD 7970 GHz Edition, was the first non-reference card based on Tahiti XT2 GPU. Additionally this was the only Radeon HD 7970 to feature 6GB of memory. Card was so fresh that the reviews of this card are at most a month old.
Let’s take moment of silence for this great graphics card.

Newegg marking something as discontinued doesn't mean it is discontinued, they automatically do this in their computer system when a product hasn't been in stock for a while. I've seen this happen to various 680s in the past as well.

Switched to "rumor" to avoid flaming :)

Blackened - I agree. Newegg changed there system to say "discontinued" instead of "deactivated" so we will see in the upcoming days if this holds true I guess.

Seriously what games use more than 3gb of memory?
by that standart alone, its useless to have a 6gb card.

Agree that $700 is way too expensive but its 2 primary competitors (EVGA Classy and MSI Lightning 680s) are nearly as expensive with just 2GB of VRAM, which makes them less suitable for triple monitor gaming. Good thing Sapphire still has the excellent Vapor-X 7970.

The card is for people running Eyefinity setups. Some of the new games running on max settings plus mods do eat up a lot of vram.

Agree. These types of cards are over-priced across the board.

The old 'eyefinity' edition of the 5870 was around $100 more; this is almost $300 more than a vanilla 7970. That's a lot of $$$ for extra RAM. At this price, your almost better getting a pro card.

50 more batches like this one, and maybe Sapphire could cover their expenses.

They probably did. Even though super premium cards are very limited quantity items, their profit margins are outrageous. I know for EVGA - the classified 680 has a higher profit margin than any other card they sell by a huge margin.

I'm sure the toxic was never meant to be a mainstream card - it was a niche card for eyefinity 6 users.

Price from my point of view had nothing to do with whether I owned it or not.

I've personally never found it in stock any where to order one. Tho I thought Newegg must have had it up for a bit.. they have never been "in stock" when I was around to order.

If people can never find your product.. they obviously can't buy it, regardless of the price its being sold at. Sapphire had a big PR thing on their site about how on such and such a date you could order the card at various e/retailers. I checked every day for at least 2 weeks past that day and finally gave up.

Anything from OBR is pure bullcrap. That guy is a worthless source of information and a rampant nvidia nut.

Its not cancelled:

Posted today by Sapphire on their FB page:

"We'd like to deny rumors saying that the SAPPHIRE HD7970 Toxic has been cancelled. Production is running smoothly and the next shipment will arrive in channels around the world shortly!"“Production on a card like this will always be limited, because of the tight selection process that every component needs to go though”, he explained. “To ensure that the clocks are stable at the levels our engineers have set for the top end Toxic cards, you will always be limited in terms of how many cards than make at once”.
“We think the rumour started when all of the cards made so far, sold out in every store that was carrying them across the globe”

rollo...er I mean OBR is and always has been an idiot trolling AMD on his website.

The W9000 tahiti XT Firepro card is ~$4K. At this price, it's not even in the same ballpark. ;)

The ToxicGE is a limited production card. Price/performance isn't going to compare with any of the standard production cards.

Sapphire 7970 Non Toxic 6Gb - 11197-05-40G

I would have already bought a Sapphire 7970 ghz edition 3gb if it had a dang backplate, yeah I know I can buy a backplate and install. Warranty scare though.
You spend that much money and yes Aesthetics become part of the value factor. Do I want a new car with hub caps.
Thus Sapphire messed up not Including a simple backplate on their Ghz 3Gb edition card. At least for me.
I choose no brand over the other period. If it works(as advertised) and looks good I buy it. (Yep even tires) white walls in or out? Preference.

I am looking forward to the: NON Toxic Sapphire 7970 6gb. Little devil just sitting in the background doing nothing.

As for the Toxic 7970; well they can keep it. (at that price)

My opinion and mine alone; Please do not vent a satisfaction, preference or brand war at me.

Sincerely

Stephen
