i still am wondering what happened to the gk100. I just dont think they would scrap the name.In the Nvidia roadmap leaks its absent and this is very interesting to me. Even if they had issues, its strange to me for them to go around it............

Anyway, I heard of a chip from nvidia that wouldnt be a full kepler but a fermi with some kepler traits, like a hybrid.

I am not sure what its gonna be, but it will be here soon. maybe its just the laptop chip, but i dont know...........i cant say but i know its coming...........

ps. If kepler arrives later and is better perf/$$ and perf/w, i will ebay my AMD and get an NV card. Thats how brand agnostic i am b4 anyone insinuates bias. My only bias has always been perf/$ and perf/w.

Does it have to be both better performance per $$ and performance per watt? What if it's essentially the same performance but lower power usage? Or what if it's slightly slower at the same price, but way better perf per watt?

If performance is the same, regardless of power usage, it would be a failure. Unless you are talking some ridiculous power reduction like 50%. If thats the case, then slapping two together would be really easy, and thats good too.

Something like 50% more performance with 20-30% less power would be awesome.

I hope they do this. I have two EVGA GTX 560 Ti 2GB cards looking to make use of their Step-Up program. If I can get the 580 3GB for quite a bit less than the current ~$600 MSRP, I'd be ecstatic.

If Kepler GK104 offers similar perf to Tahiti but at a higher power use, it would have to be cheaper for me to want it.

If its faster, the extra power use is justified, so would its increased cost.

If its both faster and less power use (or just a lot faster), i would immediately ebay the radeon and grab a kepler replacement. :D

Gotta be the 7000 series, Nvidia probably just wants to clear stock, while it can at current prices.

Because once 7000 series is out its probably gonna have to cut 580's down ~150$
or more (from its current price).

This is because of how big a step going from 40nm -> 28nm is.
AMD getting a card out first is bound to smash the 580 to peices, and make it look bad/expensive.
Clearing stock is my theory (the more they can sell at high prices, the more money nvidia makes).

this is the most plausible scenario. 40nm to 28nm is just huge.

I still don't see it being very compelling. At this point, it makes more sense to buy 28nm GPUs for lower power consumption as well presumably higher performance.

I can already see myself getting screwed over this. Besides the 460's setup, virtually every video card I have purchased in the past is followed by either another steep price cut, or a new product. Then, of course, there is the time where I purchased a 5870 for $399 when it came out, cancelled before it shipped because of some rumor and low and behold, that thing is STILL faster than one of my 460's... /wrists.

The 580 is a great card, but somehow I have this feeling that if it did drop to 380ish, ATI would release a card a few weeks after that is faster, cheaper and better power consumption. Or, I would skip the 580 purchase and then it would turn out that ATI released a dissapointing turd.

Ahhh... Oh well. It is just money.

Let us know what you decide so we can all do the opposite! (totally said in jest) :)
