They're just going to go back and forth. Canon will have the same thing shortly after. I'm personally not going to choose a DSLR over another solely because of it's Video capabilities. Especially in the entry-level field. Most of the owners of them are annoying and can't use most of the functions on it anyway. But, they MUST tell everyone about how great their camera is.

A d700 replacement should be pretty interesting! Even if it just has more megapixels and HD video it would totally kill 5D II sales!

I for one, resent video shooters when travelling. They tend to hog shooting positions while we still picture shooters have to wait for them. What a DSLR does video-wise is of no interest to me at all.

This. That being said, the ability of a DSLR to shoot high quality video isn't currently important to me, but could be in the future.

Honestly, I don't think I've even USED the video feature on my D90...I probably should try that sometime.

no it wouldn't.
It wouldnt help. Although the ease of changing systems is very impractical. What the Canon side was wanting in the new 5DII was basically what Nikon was already offering in the D700. An autofocus system that actually is usefull and weather sealing. And I would venture to guess as I dont know this stat off hand but the D700 probably has more fps than the 5DII. It wouldnt be hard to beat. These are very high up on the list of what camera people want to buy.

What wasnt high on the list was more pixels and and HD video which is what canon gave us, however I personally do like these features.

IMHO the dSLR format doesn't lend itself to shooting video effectively. A camera phone is a better fit to this. Get a 'flip' cam and keep it in your pocket if you want video.

The rig makes focusing and zooming a lot easier especially if you're going to do production video. I know a few videographers that do weddings and such with a 7D or 5D2. It's all very possible.

Before 5d mk2, I never cared for video. Never had a cam, not even the one on the cell phone. All that changed after I got 5d mk2. Shooting video is a whole new enjoyable experience and I dig it.

About the rig that's mentioned above: unless you're doing very high quality professional work, you don't really need that much of setup. My handheld clips mixed with some tripod clips made a college professor to be in 'shock and awe' state. It's just unbelievably good.

Same thing can be said about dslrs and you know why certain people like us here prefer heavy and bulky dslrs over P&S and phone cameras.

naw not mad. It's funny how things work here. Sad part is I can picture a few of these tools getting a dslr and this rig to go out on the town with.

For me the DSLR's doesn't seem like a very good shape ergnomically speaking...and the lack of fast auto focus...

I paid £330 for a TM10 from panasonic, looks great for youtube and on my 50" 1080P screen. I record in the lowest 1080P res mainly (youtube videos) and it looks great. I could probably edge out more detail at the higher res but for my basic needs it's the f0cking sh!t.

The video in DSLR was for photojouranlists so they could get some quick web clips WITHOUT having to carry another device. Turns out it completely blew up and a new market emerged from it.

Note the built in mics are generally crap on vdslrs, you will want an external one and hopefullly you don't pick up the motor of the zoom in your recordings!

I don't agree with Corkyg but his view is reasonable and I respect that.
I don't know what to say about you, alkemyst.

I don't understand why you're so upset and mad about this vdslr thing. Where is all that hate coming from? Has vdslr raped you and your entire family?

Nobody said Hollywood should use vdslr cameras for their movies. Nobody said or even implied vdslr produces high quality videos that can be used in Hollywood films (However, vdslrs have been used in some of the major Hollywood films for its versatility.) It's you who's making all these logical jumps. It's nobody but you who sound insane.

I just don't know why but your hate against vdslr is making you blind. You were talking about how flip-cam is better, then, all of the sudeen, your logic jumps to Hollywood fims. Jumping from extreme end to another extreme end. Don't you know where vdslr stands?

It's not that I am upset. It's the fact that you'd have to be an idiot as a normal person to buy a dSLR camera with the intent of using it for anything but very occassional video.

I think you need to follow the thread since you are lost.

Even with stereo mics, variable video zoom while recording, etc you have tons of other issues the first being the form factor simply doesn't lend itself well. Once I said that, leave it to someone to pull out the hollywood rig on this as an 'option'.

In my case, as I'm mainly a photographer, video is an option. A damn nice option that is. As for this normal person you're talking about, it's up to that person to decide what they make out of it. What are you? A dslr Nazi?
Also, it's not like dslr makers are stuffing down video feature down to your throat. It's not like they jacked up prices of dslrs with this feature. You get what you've been getting plus this damn nice video option. If you don't like it, just don't use it. It's simple as that.

Still, I'm wondering why you're so upset and mad about it. Are you a RED lover? Are you a semi professional or even professional video maker who can't stand amatuer dudes making high quality videos?
Really, what gives? While Koing and corkyg is being reasonable and logical, you just went mad screaming "WOW NEWFLASH HOLLYWOOD! FUCK JUST USE A dSLR CAMERA TO SHOOT YOUR FILMS. IT'S TEH AWESOME! this is a bit insane yet only here you'd see this." What's up with all that hysteria and stories about Hollywood when nobody mentioned anything about Hollywood?
In a way, you remind me of those old film photographers who couldn't stand digital cameras. I suggest you calm down for your mental health. I got an idea how much you hate vdslr but it's getting better and more popular. Where will you be as time goes on?

Wow...man you need to get out more. You are taking this WAY to personally. Go look at my original post and try to think about what it meant. Then look at the reply how I was somehow wrong about that and they are making TV series now with them.

Yes it's a great feature to have. No it's not going to replace a dedicated unit...which more than likely will be smaller than a good zoom lens anyway.

Try and breathe a bit and think.

I just got a 5DII. And while I was concerned about the whole AF issue, it really much ado about nothing. I use the center point AF only and use AF Lock to focus and recompose. Works just fine for me. Besides, the D700 (which I considered buying as well) is much larger and heavier than what I wanted to have. The 5DII fits my needs perfectly and may be the last DSLR I ever buy unless it evenetually gives up the ghost. No need to play the what-if waiting game when I can go out and take beautiful 35mm digital photos.

As for video: that is not why I buy a DSLR. Sure, I might use it from time to time, but moments are still best captured in stills IMO.
