Infinity Ward has been playing sly on what their next game will be and we may now know why. An inside recruitement source with Infinity Ward has let slip to VG247 that Infinity Ward may not be working on another entry in the Modern Warfare series. Instead, they are rumored to be working on a "completely new" game.
This would be a big departure for Infinity Ward as they have been responsible for the biggest hits in the Call of Duty Franchise including Call of Duty 1, 2, Modern Warfare, and Modern Warfare 2. Infinity Ward was originally formed from developers who had worked on the Medal of Honor: Allied Assault game so first-person military based shooters are clearly their bread in butter. Whether the game that represents something "completely new" is a departure from military combat shooters or first-person shooters altogether remains to be seen.
As for the Modern Warfare series, Activision may be turning that responsibility over to another studio from Canada called Sledgehammer Games according to another source for VG247.
The seventh installment in the Call of Duty series is still on track to come from Treyarch Games who also made Call of Duty: World at War and Call of Duty 3. No announcement has been made about the setting for Call of Duty 7 but rumors peg it to be set in Vietnam.
