Rumor: Infinity Ward Not Working on Modern Warfare 3

Infinity Ward has been playing sly on what their next game will be and we may now know why. An inside recruitement source with Infinity Ward has let slip to VG247 that Infinity Ward may not be working on another entry in the Modern Warfare series. Instead, they are rumored to be working on a "completely new" game.

This would be a big departure for Infinity Ward as they have been responsible for the biggest hits in the Call of Duty Franchise including Call of Duty 1, 2, Modern Warfare, and Modern Warfare 2. Infinity Ward was originally formed from developers who had worked on the Medal of Honor: Allied Assault game so first-person military based shooters are clearly their bread in butter. Whether the game that represents something "completely new" is a departure from military combat shooters or first-person shooters altogether remains to be seen.

As for the Modern Warfare series, Activision may be turning that responsibility over to another studio from Canada called Sledgehammer Games according to another source for VG247.

The seventh installment in the Call of Duty series is still on track to come from Treyarch Games who also made Call of Duty: World at War and Call of Duty 3. No announcement has been made about the setting for Call of Duty 7 but rumors peg it to be set in Vietnam.

Doesn't Activision ping-pong Call of Duty titles back and forth between IW, who makes good ones, and another company, who makes bad ones?

Wow... that is kind of surprising. Maybe more news will break soon to confirm or deny it. I still want to know where COD7 will be based,.. treyarch is being to tight lipped about it.

I guess this makes sense from a business standpoint. They can basically shit COD games out now and people will buy them regardless of who the developer is.

So instead of having IW work on another COD game, they have them work on a new IP that they can potentially milk for millions of dollars with sequels, just like COD.

They should have 4 studios working on the franchise at all times, that way they can drop a new one every three months. Then shut the multiplayer servers off for the last one release day. Boom! Revenue up the ass.

They may not be working on it "yet" but I'm sure they will be in charge of MW3. They're not going to lose the cash horse they rode in on and let another company develop it...Treyarch was in the mix with the CoD series in the early times, that's why they're still around.

Treyarch, their games are inferior.

Yes, Treyarch. Though World at War was no where near as bad as COD3.

CoD 3 ranks as one of the most dissappointing games I've played in a while. Although it wasn't as bad as Medal of Honor: Airborne.

War MMO?
Bad Company 2 is going to leapfrog most everything MW2 does, so they better step it up if they're going to stay in the FPS game.

I'd be happy without a MW3 for a while.

I mean, I like the COD series just as much as anyone else, but series is starting to get tired, IMO. Too much of the same over and over again.

Even if they did MW3 it'll just be like MW1/2. 2 isn't much different from 1 which is one of the many reasons I didn't buy it.

There was a rumor over a year ago that IW was working on a "Sci-Fi" game. At the time people thought that the rumor was in relation to what eventually became MW2. Maybe that initial rumor was correct, except instead of applying to MW2 is was about their next game after MW2.

The current rumor is that IW is working on a MMO. They've supposedly hired some people from SOE and Blizzard.
