Apple tried to incorporate resolution independence into OS X. They failed, which is why they came up with this double/quadruple-the-pixel-density solution. They did that on iOS (iPhone 4), and then did that with OS X (Retina MacBook Pro). This is the thing that I hate with current displays and current OSes.
Resolution ONLY determines how clear something will look. There's no inherent reason why text HAS to be too small to read at high resolutions.
Windows needs to have an option to adjust all text and icon sizes regardless of the resolution of the screen. I'd love to have a 300 dpi screen with readable text regardless of the screen size.
