"The graphics war is heating up, folks. In an effort to combat Nvidia's recent price cuts, we're hearing a new AMD driver is imminent. Performance improvements are thought to be the key enhancement, and though there are no specifics just yet, we wouldn't be surprised to see R9 290X frame rates jump by up to 10 per cent or so in certain games."

Is this the beta driver on their site already, or something else that is coming?

BTW, the post is a bit more ambiguous that you title led me to believe.

Is this similar to the Zeus card by chance, or does AMD really have a new driver set to increase the performance of the 290X? Would certainly be in the realm of possibility. The card is new, so an improved driver should be possible.

But saying they are putting out a new driver in response to NV's price cuts is silly. Why not just drop the price. I mean...saying...well, we are going to show you our card is worth more by releasing a new driver seems a bit unprofessional. As nitromullet said...they should do that anyway irregardless of what NV does.

Well they aren't really saying it, Hexus is. It sounds like they just added the 'in an effort to combat Nvidia's recent price cuts...' to sensationalize the story.

a bit misleading in the thread title. just pure speculation that it may be up to 10% in certain games. lol

I can't believe Hexus did that, its just 100% speculation. If this is what they consider news.....*shakes head*

Certainly sounds like speculation, though they may know more than it sounds like they do. I suppose we'll figure it out pretty soon.

it's not a speculation, AMD is working on a driver for the R9-290 launch to boost it's performance.

Thats quite an apt description TBF

Don't all new performance drivers give about that much of an improvement. The Never Settle drivers being a special case

The speculation goes that the new driver will let the 290 (non-X) clock more aggressively. That would explain why only this card is affected.

As you mentioned in the other thread about the clocks being in the BIOS, I would imagine they are in the BIOS too?

I'd guess they simply refined the drivers a bit and are working last minute with the news the 780 dropped from it's price throne, to ensure a bit more performance can get pulled out of the car?

Who knows though.

I doubt it would make much difference. Driver optimizations take time and you cannot improve everything, certainly not by 10%. And to delay the launch, let reviewers do all the work again just to optimize some select titles in order to win...I don't think that is very decent behavior.
The much more likely explanation is that clocks are raised. Maybe it's different with AMD and the driver has more influence on clocks. BIOS reports "I'm a 290" and the driver says "ok, clock to 1 GHz instead of 947 MHz". Perhaps that is possible?

They are probably boosting lower resolution performance.
