Rumor: 60GB 360 coming

Following my outing of the 16GB iPhone I have once again have attained from a rock solid source that Microsoft WILL be replacing the 20GB hard drive on the standard Xbox 360 with a larger 60GB version. Dates are not nailed down, but my source says Microsoft wants it done and dusted before the end of its financial year which translates as our Q2.

Interestingly the company is also toying with the idea of introducing a new 360 SKU and given that hard drive and connectivity variations are already covered it would seem that the most logical conclusion is a model with a built-in Blu-ray drive. An external drive makes sense too, but with the format war over it wouldn't explain Microsoft's hesitation and while it goes against the company line that the 360 is primarily a games console (verses the PS3's media centre ambitions) the collapse of HD DVD may well mean it at least wishes to give users the option. Tying this all up neatly is news that Microsoft is known to currently be in discussions with Sony.

At this stage how all these moves will affect the Arcade is unknown. A price cut is widely rumoured to be coming this month but - at least for now - it is unlikely to also be the beneficiary of a hand-me-down 20GB hard drive.

Back to certainties however, so let me tell you this: if you've been saving up for a 20GB Xbox 360 hold off. The 60GB model IS coming and you can take this exclusive to the bank...

To the bank, you say? Well, then. I'm sold!

WTH man, they should be going beyond 120GB!

😕 Honestly. Why? You'd have to download every single demo out there to fill up a 120GB now.

I can see them moving from the 20GB to the 60GB for one reason though - 20GB HDDs are probably just as expensive if not more expensive to produce than 60GB HDDs by now.

Stop acting like HD space is expensive, you stupid MS pricks.

All the MS accessories (aside from the controllers) are overpriced.

Another SKU? You mean in addition to Arcade, Premium, Halo, and Elite?

I think they are talking about taking the 20GB off the Premium and putting on a 60GB instead.

Then MS better be prepared to sell me one for cheap! Bastards! They should just let us use any SATA drive we want. Not like they are hurting for $$$

I was referring to the little bit about the internal blu-ray drive, which would seem separate from the Premium going from 20 to 60. I suppose they could just make the Elite have the blu-ray drive (if they do go that route).

I don't expect to ever see a Blu-Ray drive in the 360 for the same reasons we never saw a HD DVD drive - speed, costs and splitting the hardware base drastically.

It makes sense to replace the 20s with 60s. It doesn't make any sense for them to integrate bluray. Just like it didn't make sense to integrate HDDVD.

More and more "rumours" seem to point to a Blu-ray for the 360, but if they decide to make a Blu-ray built-in version, does that qualify as a new console? There'd be absolutely no point in having a built in version if they didn't plan on actually putting stuff out on that format.

If they are moving to 60gb get call back all the 20gb models, replace with 60gb ones and send every arcade and core owner the 20gb ones and yank the arcade/core model too.

No more whining from developers about how they don't have a hard drive to work with.

The day we see blu-ray built in will be when Microsoft has already move onto the next xbox and simply putting in little things to get people to buy the xbox 360 which hopefully by then they are already making a profit off the system.

When the retail $ difference between a 60g and one double the size is only $15, it doesn't make much sense to not go all the way.

There will still be 360's out there without hard drives.

that's why I suggest Microsoft send all the 20gb ones they have to arcade/core owners for free. And pull the arcade/core model off the market. Repackage them into new 60gb models.

what are they gonna do with all the ones they have anyhow.

Yeah, they should furq themselves.

Dirty birds.

At least they won't do what they did with the first Xbox and just format a higher capacity drive to a lower limit.
