Rules in router's firewall added by themselves

I am certainly not a guru but I know a little bit about networking, so feel free to use tech talk. A firewall rule was added to my router, a DI-604, and I was not made aware of it. Do routers add rules automatically? If I remember right it was a rule for Teredo (a sort of tunneling service for Vista, ipv4 and ipv6). I was curious and went out to google it and found that there have been problems with Vista's firewall letting innapropriate traffic through related to Teredo, back in 07'. My computer is up to date. Do I have something to fear here?

Somebody / something could have back-door reconfigured your router.

The more likely problem is that you may have Vista / XP in use on your LAN and they could be using their UPNP type configuration setting capabilities to reprogram the router's firewall working as they're designed to work in this respect. It is the way that they automatically set up port forwarding and router firewall exceptions to permit various kinds of applications to work when those applications / networking options are enabled in Vista/XP.

If you want full manual control of the router, just turn off its UPNP capability and turn off the UPNP related features / services in your XP / Vista systems.
