Question Rufus (Latest) Download Issue

I thought I'd better update my older version of Rufus to the latest version as I may need to use it sometime in the next few months.

I went direct to the official downloads site and chose the portable download........and the download failed. I tried several times again, same problem.

Same with the .EXE version too and all the third-party web sites providing links to it have the same trouble.

Can someone here test it to confirm whether this is a general problem or not?

The latest version v3.2? From here?

I've just tried with two different browsers and a download manager. The latter can sometimes be the source of the trouble but not in this case. It reports the problem as a 'File Access Error' immediately after downloading it.

Rufus Portable versions v3.18, v3.19 and v3.20 all result in 'Failed' downloads using all three methods. Rufus v3.17 and earlier versions all download without issue.

I'm thinking it must be my ******* anti-virus software blocking those more current versions for whatever reason. Checking the AV chest I've entries for today which, although not specifying the download, it seems to fit. 🙁

I've tried downloading it to a different directory on another drive and to an encrypted volume as well. I've also just tried using an 'anonymous' browser with private settings and a proxy server - no difference.

A drive error doesn't make much sense: its a problem specifically with the Rufus v3.18 downloads onward. Its just a download, I'm not trying to run it.

As asked: why does v3.17 and before download without issue?

Never had anything like this with any download.

I've tried them all thanks. Same problem.

Tracked down what it is - I needed to turn off ALL my AV shields and then magically it downloads without issue.

Second problem I've had this week with AVAST, it didn't like, as it described it: an unverfied security certificate. Hate it, but it is so embedded its easier to find a work around than uninstall it.

I'm coming round to that position myself. I've long thought the computer virus threat industry has helped created bloated monsters meant to protect a PC user but that more often than not cause them more trouble than the things they're being shielded from.

Avast is VERY hard to get rid of. But so are some others. If you simply uninstall, there will probably be lots of rubbish left to bite you later. With persistent unwanted stuff like this, you might try uninstalling it with revo uninstaller to hunt down some of the booby traps it has left on your system. There may be better garbageware un-installers these days.

It's like getting involved with a gang, or the mafia, or stepping in wet dog sh*t. Hard to shake off your shoes.

Good luck.

AVAST actually has a specific uninstaller tool: avastclear.exe that is recommended and version specific too if you're using an older Windows OS or CPU. It also needs admin permission and to be run in safe mode.

The problem is that if you use Windows built in program uninstall tools or a third party uninstaller like Revo or BCUninstaller first you risk not getting everything and, apparently there are reports the PC can be left refusing to boot even in safe mode.

Too risky for my taste.

It's been ages, but I did use avastclear, but it still didn't get rid of everything.

In all fairness Avast did do its job. The problem is AV's have been dumbed down to accommodate the average facebook user so the OP didn't get an option to ignore the warning. One of the first options I look for in AV settings is to ask the user what to do if it detects anything. Unfortunately options and settings have been trimmed down over the years.

I used to use Avast but it got so bloated I moved to Avira. Then Avira got bloated so I used Defender for a while. Now I'm using Malwarebytes because I had an unused lifetime license I bought years ago. I also have hitman pro free for on demand file and system scanning. I also upload every file under 650MB to virustotal to be scanned by multiple scanners.
