Hey Thanks darkswordsman, thats a whole load of extra info for me to consider too
I admit that I have a enjoy these types of snacks a bit too much. I like potatoes in general a bit too much really. Been working on converting to baked instead of processed forms, but always will get cravings for fries.
Walmart sells Great Value chips in both rippled and wavy. Exact same thing except for the frequency and amplitude of the waves. And just as good as Lay's, with maybe a few more broken chips.
Yeah the Great Value chips are fine (but its pretty difficult to fuckup plain potato chips). They actually had some knock-off Sun Chips ones that I liked but now I can't find them. They were softer (still crunchy so its not like they were soft pita chips or even soft cracker level) than Sun Chips, but tasted pretty much the same.
The only dip besides guacamole worth it's water is sour cream and onion dip with a standard salted potato chip.
I'm not a big sour cream fan (and ugh at how a lot of dips are sour cream based, and especially those shitty ones that have "GUACAMOLE!" and died green). I also hate how many multi-layer dips make sour cream the main ingredient. Ditch it entirely and let me enjoy the rest.
I like sour cream and onion flavored chips (the Pringles ones used to be one of my favorite junk foods as a kid, when I'd get to rent like Friday the 13th movies and get junk food for doing good in school; oh I had some recently and Pringles doesn't have the little green chive flakes on them any more WTF?), but I fucking HATE people putting that shit in mashed potatoes. My sister's fiancee did that for Thanksgiving this year and I ate just a small amount (normally I can eat like a 5lb bag worth of mashed potatoes just by myself).
oh now we're talking guac and possibly salsa? OK...I don't really call those dips but I'll endulge. That shit is basically a meal, but I don't eat those with potato chips. Do people do that?
Corn chips only, for me. And I'd have to say that salsa is probably the number one food product for me, by volumetric consumption at this point in my life. But, for whatever reason, I can't imagine those foods being eaten with any type of potato chip. Sounds weird.
I used to like SC&O and things like that--still do--I just don't seek it out. Artichoke dips and the like are great, too...just don't care to make them or request them. Put it in my face and I will eat it, though.
I prefer a black bean, corn, and/or multi-bean, oil& vinegary type dip to those "ranch-based" things, though.
I disagree that it's a meal. Bit of chips and guac is a fine snack. It can certainly turn into a meal's worth quickly though (as chips in general have a way of doing).
Definitely salsa is good (chunky for me though, hate the practically liquid salsa that way too many restaurants have). Yeah salsa wouldn't be good for potato. I actually do dip the Thick Cut Lays in guac. Same with Sun Chips. I wouldn't say its great, but its fine.
Corn chips are good (I do a lazy ass thing, dump Chili Cheese Frito's, Bush's Kidney beans in chili sauce, and some shredded cheddar cheese). For reasons I cannot explain, I love the blue corn Tostito's, especially for taco salads. I've tried plenty of other blue corn tortilla chips but something about the Tostito's that I prefer. I also like the the Yellow Corn Doritos (I don't know how people stand eating the over the top flavored other Doritos). I've enjoyed the black bean chips I've had.
I tend towards the more plain stuff now, or simple flavors. I rarely get the flavored versions of chips/crackers. And even more rarely do any real dip with them. I'll eat them if offered and I'm hungry. One exception I occasionally make is for Honey Mustard Pringles. I also did like the Honey Mustard pretzels, but when it comes to pretzels they gotta be big and soft or filled.
Spinach dips are a total fucking crapshoot. I've had some that were great, and then others that gave me flashbacks of when they'd force me to eat that fucking disgusting canned atrocity they try to call spinach (that made me swear off spinach for a long time).
I know they're goddawful for you, but man are the bloomin onion/awsome blossoms/whatever name for the fried split onions are so damn good. I tried some chips (think they might've even been Fun'yuns) that were flavored like that, but it wasn't the same even if they did get the flavor of the sauce down pretty well.
