ru486 and emergency contraception

i'm just curious as to how people get the idea that emergency contraception is the same thing as RU-486 (aka the abortion pill). they're totally different in function and capability. where did this myth come from? i had sex ed, and i don't remember them dispersing false information like that, so is this just the work of overzealous religious freaks?

well i call it the "morning after pill" but it's technically not because it works for 72 hours after sex. but basically it's an increased dosage of normal birth control pills that a woman can take up to 72 hours after sex and it'll try and prevent a pregnancy from occuring. the success rate decreases over time. i think it's something like 90 percent within 24 ours, and 75 within 72 or something. but like the name says, it's for emergency use only, not intended to be used as regular contraception.

Oddly enough, thats the same moniker that RU-486 picked up along the way, I cant imagine any confusion starting from 2 different things having the same slang term.

I was taught in Sex-Ed that no amount of birth control pills taken after the fact is going to change the fact that you are pregnant, they just dont work that fast. I guess you could OD on them, but thats a whole different conversation.

really... i've never heard that term used to describe ru-486. whenever i hear the two pills together, it's always somebody confusing the two.

well maybe not in regular dosage. but pregnancy is not immediate, it can take up to a few days to occur, thus allowing time for the morning after pill to work.
