rtl8139 vs 8139too?

I think while recompiling the kernel, there is an option 'Support for older 8139-based cards'.. or something liek that. I think you can use rtl8139 if that is enabled. I remember using that driver when I had Mandrake 7.x (ah! the good ol' days!!!)

In v. 2.4, the driver for recent RealTek chipset-based cards might have been replaced by 8139too.

My roommate was having issues with 8139too (it worked fine until today). I remembered using rtl8139 on my 486 last year, but I guess I had a 2.2 kernel on it instead of a 2.4. It seems that the NIC is dying. He's using a different one now without any trouble.

There's also a third, I think it's called 8139c or something like that. They just correspond to different versions of the chip, and some of them overlap. I always use 8139too.
