I have an rt311 router and an 8 port hub, with TW
cable modem and can play microsoft motocross madness through the cable modem direct but not through the router. zone help says to make sure my port 47624 initial outbound is open, and UDP 2300-2400 also are open or have permission.
netgear won't be open till tommorrow. Does anyone know the solution to this one. the telnet menu and online tips are confusing to me????

Try this:

1. Login to your router.
2. Choose option 15, SUA Server Setup.
3. Next to 1.Default, enter the IP Address of your machine (192.168.x.x)

That should make it work.

I emailed you some other questions, but for others benefit want to post the solutions here also, 1. how do I know the IP of each computer on the router.2 how do I save the changes in menu option 15 permantly?
(they keep going back to default 0.0.0.0 when I hit enter , then escape and then check em again)

If you have dhcp on the router enabled the ips will change everytime you restart the computers, if you have dhcp off then you can go look in the tcpip network properties on each comp to see what ip you have manually assigned it.

I prefer to leave DHCP on, I don't mind changing a software setting
like in the router menu, just don't want to have to disconnect the router to play a game, then my wife can't use the other computer till I reconnect it. Also , when I change a telnet router menu setting do I have to reboot the computer? (its got scuzzy drives and reboots real slow)

When you change a router setting you dont have to reboot the computer but you may have to reboot the router. If you want dhcp on and you want to use dmz one thing you can do is turn off all comps, then turn on the comp you want to be the dmz comp, then turn on the rest. If you leave the dmz comp on 24/7 you shouldnt have a problem, it should keep the same ip although Im not positive.

whats DMZ?
I have one computer on all the time , but not the gaming one.
I think the router assigns them simple addresses like 192.168.0.2
and that since they are consecutive it will always get the same address if I turn it on first. I will try rebooting the router after I attempt to modify menu option 15 to show the ip address. thanks again.

DMZ = default in menu 15 in the netgear router setup. Basically it means, if the port isnt set to be forwarded to another comp, the incoming packet will be directed to the dmz or default comp.

Continued:
I can play one online game with the IP address (of that computer) listed in option 15 of the telnet menu, but if I try to use two computers at once to join or host an online game I can't. Motocross madness and Midtown madness both work off the msn zone website. Does anyone know how to get this router to allow multiple computers to play online at the same time through their website gaming setup.
Of course if I change the IP address to the IP of another computer then that one will work , but not more than one at a time.
I have to plug the cable modem directly into the hub (without the router) and then they all can play online at the same time.
the msn gaming zone tech support people, gave me the ports that need to be open but I can't figure out how to tell the router to leave them open??? I know some of you guys must have figured this one out already.thanks

You could always buy another IP address (real one) from your ISP. That way you could play games online with two computers or however many IP's you bought.

The problem, is that the MS games want a range of open ports, not just one, or two.
Most likely, you will not be able to use more then one computer while playing MS games.

when people come over to play online (maybe twice a month) I'll just go straight through the
hub for the MS games then. Q3 and UT seem Ok, why can't MS use the same online connection like they do? Hey thanks for the info...

does netgear have a long hold time for techsupport, Sometimes yes sometimes no...... :/
, why can't MS use the same online connection like they do? Because they try to make it difficult.
