rsync iMac to NAS?

Eug

Lifer
I have an iMac with a local external Time Machine drive, as well as another local external drive where I do direct boot and DATA backups. However, I've always been uncomfortable having it all in the same room. (The NAS is in a closet on the other side of the house.)

I have since purchased a NAS unit for the house, and have set up ftp access on the thing. What's the best way to have the NAS available to me and sync'd to my iMac so that if I ftp into the NAS any file additions/deletions will get sync'd to the iMac?

Or would I be better off setting up ftp to the iMac and using a NAS share as a Time Machine drive? I'm not keen on this option but if it's better I'll consider it.

Hardware:
Gigabit network
iMac Core i7 2.93 with 1.5 GB data partition (half filled), OS X 10.6
Synology DiskStation 211j with 2 TB in SHR RAID1 config (2 x 2 TB drives).
The DS 211j also has two USB drives attached - 500 GB and 750 GB.
All backed up by UPS units.
