I know that a large percentage of folks here run a server of some sort (FTP/HTTP) from home. You need a fixed IP for that, or a workaround. I've been using FreePing to ping SWBell every 90 seconds and my IP only changed once in about 2 1/2 weeks.

I'm getting set to get RR (tomorrow) and am curious how often my IP will be changing, and if I'll need to continue to use the FreePing utility or not. Thanks.

Thanks gentlemen. I'm planning on going with DynDNS once I get RR up and running. [Scotty] Aye, Captain; we have full impulse power! And a 50kb/s upload![/Scotty]

If you have a Netgear router, it will update your IP address with Dyndns.org automatically. :)

i have RR in Kansas City

my IP hasn't changed in about 4-5 weeks, maybe longer

i run a linux router/gateway/firewall called ClarkConnect on a celeron 333 system
it has dynamic dns service included for free, so i loaded an mp3 streaming php script and can play music from it like an internet juke box

I have a Netgear RT314 and leave it on all the time. I also host a FTP/HTTP/Counter-Strike/SHOUTCast server off the box. In over two months of using RR, in Southern California, my IP has NEVER changed. With the combination of having the router on at all times, along with the cable modem and one PC, I don't forsee my IP changing for a while. As far as I'm concerned the IP is "static" enough for what I use.

Thanks Vash, you've been a big help in pushing me to get RR. Appreciate it.

I don't think mine has changed in about 5 months or maybe longer. I use SOHO router and have 3 PCs on all the time. This is in NC.

BTW - before i moved in march i had SouthwesternBell DSL and the IP changed anywhere from a couple times a week to 3-4 times a DAY! i tried running dynamic DNS with it , but it just changed too often, it wasn't worth the hassle

i like RR much better than DSL , its also faster for me, my DSL was ~800kbps down/128k up
with RR i get 2Mbps down/256k up (or maybe 384k up, i forget)

have fun! :)

if you have IIS running anywhere on your network, be sure its fully up to date with security patches before you plug into RR, i noticed that within a few hours of connecting to RR my intrusion detection was showing many, many nimda/code red worm hits from infected boxen

Hey not only do we have the same cars in the family, but we have exact ISP histories! *gives you a non-sexual hug* :)

I have SWB DSL now...until tomorrow, that is. My DL is very good. 1.1mb/s my upload is a crappy 128kbps. About 15kb/s. Blaaaaaaaaaaaaah.

I have pretty decent filters on my router as well as I update NAV every single day. I'll be oK. Thanks for the tip, though. Oh, I don't have IIS running. I use GuildFTP for my FTP box.

No problemo. I came from a Verizon area on DSL with 384up and 1.5down around $80/month and was quite happy with my line. When I moved into my house, DSL was from SBC and getting the same speed was going to cost around $130/month and the closest and cheaper was $65/month (256up). Being that I had basic cable already in the place (townhome), getting the cable modem was a no brainer and installed in 3 minutes. Since then, I'm a firm believer of cable modems being quite good. RR in Socal is just too good to pass up. 2.0Megabit down and 384up for $45/month? Cmon, that's a steal. When d/ling large apps, the xfer gets to be around 235k/sec and usually can start 500+k/sec and taper down in a minute or two. If RR had a biz line that had more upstream, I'd get it.

I have RR in Kansas City as well. Since I got the service back in January my IP hasn't changed once.
