I am new to mandriva and I was playing around with it.....and i tried to install an RPM file...it says that it installed but then...it doesnt appear in the "Start menu" so I am not sure where the file went and hence how to use it.

Sometimes the RPM's require you to log off / log on . Do you know the package by name ? If you do you can try and run the program from the command line , and maybe make a shortcut in the menu

Depending on what it is, it may or may not show up in the K menu.
Wouldn't make much sense to put a CLI app there for example.

If the RPM is not distro-specific, a server app (eg: apache), or another desktop environment, then it likely won't show up in your menu. What did you install? I recommend using urpmi whenever possible (check out easy urpmi for mirrors).
