rowing machines

So I'll be heading over to the gym in a half hour and intend on using one of the rowing machines for the first time.

Are there any frequent noob mistakes that I should try and avoid?

Use your whole body and make the motion fluid. Do not use your arms alone; this is not an lat exercise. Keep your back straight. Go forward, arms out stretched, legs bent, arms if they come near the knees will go outside of them, so the knees should always be very close together. As the legs near full extension you'll end up leaning a bit and then can pull with your arms for the last few inches.
