Roving perfume salesmen...

Throughout the years while working at various retail locations, I have often come in contact with various door-to-door sales people. Many of these people are selling perfume and cologne, at what seem to be very, very good prices. Of course they assure me that they are indeed the actual cologne and not some cheap imitation. When I ask about the generic, nondescript packaging that the cologne comes in, they always say that these are sample bottles, which come packaged differently than regular store bought cologne.

These sales people usually have the same pitch, something along the lines of "we are way overstocked on this, and have to sell it today. So, we will sell it to you for 60%-80% less than normal price." One of my coworkers was interested in a bottle of Issey Miyake, and the solicitor told him that he could have a 3.4 oz bottle for $30. My coworker, being a salesman himself, told the scent merchant that he could only afford $15. The salesman agreed, and my coworker is now the proud owner of a new bottle of cologne.

Have any of you ever encountered these wandering salesmen? Have you ever bought anything from them? Is there any way to tell if a perfume or cologne is authentic or not?

Thanks
