Gunman blasts police car with AK47 during routine stop
THIS is the terrifying moment an armed madman opened fire on a police car with an AK47 during a routine traffic stop.

James Gilkerson, 42, blasted the vehicle in a hail of bullets as two cops took cover.

They returned fire and eventually managed to kill him with multiple shots.

Police in Middlefield in Ohio, US, remain clueless as to why Gilkerson started the fierce, unprovoked gun battle.

Middlefield Police Chief Arnold Stanko said: “He got of the vehicle, intending to kill my officers. We don't know why he did it.”

Footage shows Gilkerson jumping out of his car, which had been pulled over for failing to stop at an intersection, and opening fire on cops Erin Thomas and Brandon Savage.

Thomas is heard yelling as bullets pierce the car’s windshield before the two officers fire back and the gunman collapses.

Cops later searched Gilkerson's car and found eight 40-round magazines of bullets and combat books, including “Backyard Rocketry: Converting Model Rockets Into Explosive Missiles” and “Homemade Detonators: How To Make Them”.

The two officers survived although Thomas lost a finger in the March 10 attack

Good thing he came out shooting. I've seen the story (ies?) where they play along, then shoot the cops in the back.

In all fairness most cops don't know the difference between an SKS and an AK47. If it was an SKS it could have taken a clip.

Suicide by cop is a real shitty thing to do to someone. Now those cops get to live with killing a guy that should have just put that rifle in his mouth and offed himself.

Clip, magazine, call it what you want, my point was at some point it's emptied and has to be changed before more bullets can be discharged..

Not really, a clip doesn't stay in the weapon.

I'm not a gun owner (yet) so I have little to no knowledge of gun loading methods, I do know that at some point it runs out of ammo and has to be re-loaded, the cops were smart to stay behind the dash until that time arrived..

They're lucky that shooter wasn't trained or that they weren't trapped in the vehicle.
I heard it was her last day with the FTO and that she lost a finger.

Well if you are taking cover you can't see when he is out of ammo, you can't see at all, he could stop shooting and pretend to be out and save the last 5 etc when you go to check before he reloads. There is no "smart" way to do it, just luck, they could have easily been killed.

Guy is obviously crazy I have no audio but he was yelling "kill me!" ???

I don't think it was suicide by cop, I think it was just a taunt when he said "kill me". According to the article, he had bomb making manuals in the car along with more ammo. For all we know, he was plotting something big and knew he was screwed the moment he was pulled over.

Have you ever seen Battlestar Galactica? That show is nearly unwatchable because they'll often get out from cover while the robots are still shooting, stand up, get shot, then some stupid dramatic scene starts.

Police in real life - take cover when the guy is shooting
Battlestar Galactica - stand up when they are firing at you

For everyone who thinks Battlestar Galactica is not a horrible show, please watch this video and learn:
how not to be seen

Cop didn't have a revolver. And how is sitting and waiting while you're getting shot at smart?

This could have turned out so much worse. Honestly, if I were one of the police officers in this particular situation, I think my conscience would be perfectly clear. There was no question that this guy deserved to die.

Sad, all this over a potential traffic ticket. Was losing his life really worth $120 bucks that he wont even get to see? Obviously a complete crazy nut.

No such thing as a"routine" traffic stop, they are all potentially dangerous.

This is why police say things like "Stay in the fucking car!" or when you get out, they search you and your interior for weapons, because 1 out of 1000000 traffic stops could be some whacko ready to go out in a blaze of ridiculousness
