Routine HDD cloning software/drive?

The "server" computer at a market I'm working at has no form of backup. I'm worried that if it goes down, all will be lost. I guess the previous owners never worried about it and the computer has been fine 24/7 the last five years or so. But fo peace of mind I'd like to set up some type of backup. While my first choice was a RAID 1 setup, I later deteremined I don't want to alter the computer as it is now. Would just buying an external hard drive and having some type of software to clone the server HDD overnight be an acceptable method?

Seems reasonable to me... how much data are we talking about, here?

A simple program like Acronis can accomplish it automatically.
