My Linksys works well.
I can run my laptop and PC without any issue.
It also has IPSec pass through for my VPN.

I went for the "Deluxe" FREESCO router @ $60. PPro 200, 24MB EDO, 3.5" Floppy, 2 x 3Com 905Cs, case. :)

get the netgear rt314 it's a good router. The Linksys has a bigger cache but some people ( not me, mine works perfectly fine) are having problems with it.

cpu speed is what it's all about folks. it's the speed of the chip that is going to produce results faster than something with a slower one. grab an old p120 and use that or buy something with a fast cpu in it for premium speed and rapid port opening.

The SMC Barricade Ownz j000!

Seriously, get it. It's got a built in 4 port switch and print server. It's configurable / upgradeable via the web based interface. And it's just as much as the rest of 'em.

Windogg,

You're such a spendthrift.:D

shiznut123,

They do the same thing, but a switch has brains. It routes packets to the actual destination without looking around. A hub hunts around until it finds where the info should go. On a small network, your hub will be just fine.

shiznut123-
The Netgear RT-314 has worked very well with my Road Runner cable connection. I have found no issues with it and have only had to re-boot it only once in 4 months. Setup is a breeze as I had it up and running in about 5 minutes. The Netgear 314 is a just a Netgear 311 with a 4 port switch integrated into it. The price difference is minimal between the 2 models so the 314 would my choice in spite of the fact that you already have a hub.
The Zyxel Prestige 314 is also very good. The guts and BIOS in the Netgear unit are actually purchased from Zyxel.
With either of these 2 units no switch is required as both have 4 switched ports. If you have a need to connect more than 4 computers on your home network, you can connect an 8 port hub to each of the 4 switched ports which would give you the ability to connect 32 computers to the router. (If you need to this I want to come over to your house and play :D)
Yes, you can use any of the computers connected the router regardless of which port they are connected and regardless of whether any other computers is running.

hi bex0rs YGPM also with my e-mail

I just bought a baricade and they failed to ship the 2 Nic cards so all I can do for a week or more is read and understand how to install the 4 win98 computers I will have (now have 3 pentium 133 2 each and a pentiun 166 mhz and am getting an aa T-Bird 1.0 or 1.1 or 1.2 depending on how much cash is left after the other expenses.) since they are all gonna run on win 98 do I designate one as the vertual server and set it up as the instruction state? then after I do it do I need to install the baricade into the other computers or do I just install from the controll pannel? they mention nothing about what to put into the other 3 computers in the instructions - else I just mam not getting it.
