Routers with L7 Filtering

You will know because it is configurable. If you bought a consumer grade firewall dont expect L7 filtering.

Ive been looking into this myself, ive come to the conclusion you either need to build your own firewall box and run it behind your router to accomplish this. Or step up to Enterprise level hardware costing lots of $$$

Most firewalls I know also act as layer 3 devices. No need for a router in front of the firewall.
Pfsense and Sophos are free products that will accomplish L7 filtering while routing traffic.

True, unless you need wireless, then you are probably going to want to keep your router to use as a AP, pfsense doesnt do wireless well, or at least it didnt use to.

Turn the old router into an access point. Honestly that is about what a consumer router is worth imo. Ill probably drop buying something like ASUS routers in favor of Google Wifi + Sophos firewall.
