Hey,

I just got home for the summer from school and am trying to set up my router so we can hook up both my parents computer and my own computer to the cable modem.

The hardware setup consists of a Linksys 4port Cable/Dsl router, a 3com officeconnect cable modem, and ACC Cable Modem Service.

I have everything plugged in but the router will not recognize an IP address from the cable modem. Is it possible that the cable company can block me from using a router or something?

EDIT: On a side note, i am unable to get to linksys.com to look up any manuals. Even when i ping the site my requests are timed out.

<< Have you configured the router at all? >>

Well i had it set with the same settings it had for my cable modem service up at school (pretty much all default). Obtain ip automatically, no pppoe, use dhcp. Not sure what else i would need to set. Up at school all i did was hit refresh/renew on the Status page when i was talking to the router and it would automatically set the ip.

Try just resetting the router by doing the paper clip trick and see if that helps.

Yea, i reset it a few times... Looking at the lights, they seem to be talking between one another, but it wont take the ip.

The cable company may have implemented something where it recognizes the MAC address. I am assuming that you used to have only one computer plugged into that line, am I correct?

Yes, you are correct. My dad just purchased a new cable modem about 2 weeks ago and they asked him for the cable modems MAC addy...

I may be wrong but I think you need to clone the MAC address. I have read about it before, but I know pretty much nothing. I am used to always being assigned specific IPs.
